‘The Way Home’ Season 5 Secrets Revealed – Here’s Where the Story Would Have Gone
Even though “The Way Home” has officially ended after four seasons, fans still have plenty of questions about what could have happened if the story continued. Now, executive producers Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke are opening up about their original ideas for a possible Season 5.
Speaking with TV Insider, the mother-daughter creative team revealed that they always had more stories planned for the Landry family. While the Season 4 finale gave viewers closure, the ending was also designed to leave the door open for more adventures.
One major storyline they considered was Elliot’s fate. The finale revealed that Elliot (Evan Williams) survived after being shot in the past, eventually returning home and getting engaged to Kat (Chyler Leigh). However, Clarke admitted that if the show had been renewed for another season, they likely would have ended Season 4 on a much bigger cliffhanger.
“I think if we’d had a Season 5, we would have ended Season 4 on is he alive or is he dead versus what we had to do,” Clarke explained. She added that killing Elliot was never seriously considered because it would have changed the entire emotional direction of the story.
The show’s final episode also wrapped up several other character arcs. Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) moved toward her future and possible romance with Max (Dale Whibley). Del (Andie MacDowell) found peace and was ready to continue her relationship with Sam (Rob Stewart). Jacob (Spencer MacPherson) married Abby (Holly Deveaux), while the mystery surrounding KC (Vaughan Murrae) and the future remained part of the show’s larger story.
If Season 5 happened, the creators said they would have focused more on these relationships rather than introducing a completely new storyline. Conkie said she wanted to explore more of Jacob and Abby’s relationship, as well as spend more time with Alice and Max. She also wanted to see what the future looked like for Kat and Elliot after their engagement.
“I would have loved to have spent more time with the Jacob love story, see it grow a little more. And I would have loved to have spent a little more time with the Max Alice love story, and, of course, the Elliot Kat story,” Conkie said.
Clarke also shared that she was interested in exploring the story of Griffin and Tessa, including what happened after their time jump and how Tessa became the person fans know.
The creators explained that one of the biggest challenges of ending the series was deciding which stories to leave behind. There were many characters and time periods they wanted to explore, including younger versions of Rita and other members of the Landry family.
However, Clarke said she was proud of what the team accomplished with the final season. Looking ahead, the producers also imagined where the characters would be after the finale. Conkie believes Alice would continue chasing her dreams and become successful, while Kat and Elliot would build a happy life together.

Clarke imagined the family continuing to visit the pond, but with a different relationship with it. Instead of being controlled by secrets and pain, the pond would become something they could understand and appreciate.
“I think they’re going down to that pond. I just don’t think that will ever go away,” Clarke said. She also suggested that Kat could become the person who preserves the family’s history, writing down everything they learned about the pond and their past.
Although Season 5 never happened, the creators believe the ending still gave fans the important things they wanted: answers, emotional closure, and hope for the future.
For Clarke and Conkie, the biggest sign of the show’s success was how deeply fans connected with it. They said many viewers reached out to explain how “The Way Home” helped them through difficult moments, from grief to loneliness.
While the Landrys’ journey may be finished on screen, the creators made it clear that this world still has many stories left to tell.
