This is the Movie Even Quentin Tarantino Thought Was Too Wild to Direct

Quentin Tarantino has never been the biggest fan of modern superhero movies, but that does not mean he has never been interested in comic book characters. In fact, the filmmaker has admitted that there were certain comic stories he loved growing up. However, there was one Marvel project that he believed was simply too strange and difficult to bring to life.

That movie was Doctor Strange. Before the 2016 Marvel Studios film finally reached theaters, the project spent years stuck in development. Several directors were attached at different points, including horror legends like Wes Craven and Guillermo del Toro, before eventually leaving the project. When the film finally moved forward, Scott Derrickson took over as director, bringing his background in horror to Marvel’s mystical superhero.

Tarantino, however, admitted that Doctor Strange was not a movie he could imagine himself making.

Speaking about his relationship with comic books, Tarantino explained that he was always drawn to stories that felt closer to traditional movies rather than fantasy adventures.

“I was really into Sgt Fury and his Howling Commandos, the Marvel version of Sgt Rock,” Tarantino said. “I imagined doing a movie version when I was a kid, and I do a shot at Sgt Fury in True Romance. I was always attracted to comic books that read more like movies, as opposed to the more fantastical comics.”

Because of that, the filmmaker felt Doctor Strange was outside his comfort zone. “I couldn’t imagine making a movie out of Doctor Strange,” Tarantino said. “That was too wild.”

The challenge of adapting Doctor Strange was clear. Unlike many Marvel heroes who rely on technology, strength, or military skills, Stephen Strange’s world is built around magic, alternate dimensions, and supernatural ideas. Turning that into a movie that audiences could understand was considered a major challenge.

Eventually, Scott Derrickson managed to make that unusual concept work. Released in 2016, Doctor Strange introduced audiences to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange, a talented surgeon whose life changes after a devastating accident forces him to explore the world of magic.

The movie received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised its visual style, creative action scenes, and Cumberbatch’s performance. Many reviewers highlighted the film’s unique look, especially its reality-bending sequences that pushed the limits of Marvel’s usual style.

The film was also a box office success, earning more than $675 million worldwide and becoming an important part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Its success proved that audiences were willing to accept stranger and more experimental superhero stories.

Doctor Strange’s impact continued years later with the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi. The sequel expanded the character’s connection to alternate realities and leaned even further into horror elements.

While reactions to the sequel were more divided, many fans still viewed Doctor Strange as one of Marvel’s more interesting heroes because of how different his stories were from traditional superhero adventures.

The character also became an important part of the larger MCU storyline, especially after appearing in major crossover films like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. His abilities helped introduce concepts like the multiverse, which became a major theme for Marvel’s future projects.

In the end, Tarantino’s comments show just how unusual Doctor Strange seemed before it became a successful franchise. What looked too strange for one of Hollywood’s most famous directors became one of Marvel’s most visually creative and memorable movies.
