Thor 5 Is Reportedly in Development at Marvel Studios

While some original Avengers like Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow have bid their farewell to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some other original members of the team are still there, and there are chances we could see more of them in the future. Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk was last seen last year in the ‘She-Hulk’ series, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye a year before in the ‘Hawkeye’ series, and the situation with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is particularly interesting.

Chris Hemsworth debuted as God of Thunder in the original ‘Thor’ movie in 2011 before he reprised the role in all four ‘Avengers’ movies and three ‘Thor’ sequels. His fourth and currently latest standalone movie, ‘Thor: Love & Thunder,’ was released in 2022, and despite mixed reviews that deemed it inferior to 2017’s ‘Thor: Ragnarok,’ the movie grossed $760 million worldwide. The movie’s ending announced that “Thor will return” eventually, but will that be in some all-new ‘Thor’ movie or upcoming Avengers movies? It remains to be seen.

Marvel Studios is reportedly working on Thor 5 with Taika Waititi!

Although ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ was a letdown, with many fans claiming that the movie’s screenplay wasted Academy Award winner Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher, the director Taika Waiti teased plans for a new villain in a potential fifth film in the ‘Marvel’s Thor 4: Love and Thunder Movie Special Book,’ which is set to start publishing in September this year.

“What is left to do to him [Thor]? It’s got to be something that feels like it’s carrying on with the evolution of the character, but still in a very fun way and still giving him things to come up against that feel like they’re building on the obstacles that he has to overcome. I don’t think we can have a villain that’s weaker than Hela. I feel like we need to step up from there and add a villain that’s somehow more formidable”

While it’s still unknown if Waititi would return to direct Thor 5 (of course that it’s unknown when the movie hasn’t even been officially announced yet), that doesn’t mean he won’t be involved in some other way. After all, he can always return as an actor and reprise the role of Korg in some future MCU installments. Still, Waititi teased that we could expect a really powerful villain in potential Thor 5, and even though Hercules was already teased as a future adversary to Thor, that doesn’t mean he’ll be the only one God of Thunder will face in future movies.

Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige never provided any official statements that ‘Thor 5’ will actually happen. Still, despite the reviews, the movie was commercially successful, and the post-credit scenes of ‘Love & Thunder’ already teased us that we can expect more Thor content in the MCU in the future. It’s unknown how many movies and appearances Chris Hemsworth has on his current contract, but ‘Love & Thunder’ certainly wasn’t the right movie for him to say goodbye to his most known role.

Apart from Hemsworth and Bale, ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ also starred Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/Mighty Thor, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif, Taika Waititi as Korg, and Russell Crowe as Zeus.

All Thor movies are available to stream on Disney+.

Do you think Thor should get another standalone movie? Should Taika Waititi direct it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
