Tom Holland Hopes Fans Take a Lesson from Peter Parker’s Loneliness in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Tom Holland has shared new comments about Spider-Man: Brand New Day, focusing on the unexpected partnership between Spider-Man and The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal.
In an interview with Collider as part of its Summer Preview series, Holland spoke about how the relationship between the two characters became one of the most interesting parts of the film. According to the report by Ryan O’Rourke for Collider, Holland said he was excited about how the dynamic developed both on and off the page.
He explained that working with Bernthal brought a new energy to the story. He said, “I think one of my favourite aspects of this new film is the relationship between The Punisher and Spider-Man. It’s no secret that I absolutely love Jon Bernthal, and sharing the screen with him and building this new onscreen relationship was so fun.”
Holland also noted that the final version of their scenes evolved during filming. He credited director Destin Daniel Cretton for allowing the actors freedom to experiment. He said, “What is in the film is very different to what was on the page, and I’m so grateful to Destin for giving us the freedom to play with it and create something really special.”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter Parker’s identity was erased from everyone’s memory. The new film follows Peter as he continues life alone while still operating as Spider-Man in secret. Over time, that isolation begins to affect him emotionally, especially as he watches the people he once knew move on without him.
The story also introduces new challenges, including changes in Peter’s powers and the arrival of new threats. As the film develops, Spider-Man is forced to rely on unexpected allies, including The Punisher, which sets up a very different kind of team-up than audiences have seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Holland also spoke about the tone of the film and how the creative team worked to balance darker themes with Spider-Man’s usual humor. He explained that it was not always simple to manage that mix, especially after the emotional ending of No Way Home. He said, “It was tricky to find the balance. We really didn’t want to take the sacrifice in No Way Home for granted.”
He added that much of the humor in the new film comes from situations rather than traditional jokes, which helps keep the story grounded while still entertaining.
According to Collider’s report, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also explores Peter’s growth after years of personal sacrifice and isolation. Holland said this version of the character feels more mature, shaped by the time that has passed between films.
The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and continues the story of Peter Parker as he tries to rebuild his life while dealing with both personal loss and new responsibilities. Holland suggested that the relationship between Spider-Man and The Punisher may even continue beyond this film, depending on how audiences respond.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to release in theaters on July 31, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
