Tom Holland Says ‘The Odyssey’ Premiere Is More Important Than the World Cup
Big premieres always come with their own gravitational pull, but for at least one cast member this week, Christopher Nolan’s latest epic managed to outmuscle even the World Cup. As England prepared for a crucial FIFA World Cup match, the London red carpet for one of the summer’s most anticipated films quietly became the bigger story for its own leading man.
Tom Holland arrived in a tailored dark suit at London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square for the world premiere of ‘The Odyssey,’ joining a packed lineup that included Christopher Nolan, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. The event marked the official culmination of a whirlwind promotional weekend that had already included a rooftop photocall earlier in the day.
That timing put Holland in an unusual position, since England’s match against Belgium in the World Cup was happening around the same stretch of days, giving fans a reason to wonder how the actor was balancing two major events pulling for his attention at once. Speaking to Deadline on the red carpet, Holland made his priorities clear without hesitation.
Holland told Deadline he “did not get up at 1am” to watch England’s World Cup match, explaining plainly that Monday’s Odyssey premiere was “arguably one of the biggest days of my life.” The comment offered a candid, human moment amid the polished chaos of a major studio rollout, with Holland choosing sleep and preparation over staying up for the match.
That kind of prioritization makes sense given how significant this stretch of the year has become for Holland professionally. He plays Telemachus, the son of Damon’s Odysseus, in Nolan’s sweeping adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, marking one of his biggest non Marvel roles to date and arriving just weeks before he returns to the MCU in ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day.’
The premiere itself capped off a mammoth release campaign that began in earnest days earlier, with Nolan and the cast first appearing together at a photocall against London’s skyline before the full red carpet gala. NBCUniversal executive Donna Langley was also expected to join the event, underscoring just how much weight the studio is putting behind the film during an already busy summer that includes Universal’s “Minions and Monsters.”
Expectations for the film’s box office performance remain high, with Deadline’s Anthony D’Alessandro projecting an opening range between 80 and 100 million dollars domestically when ‘The Odyssey’ hits North American theaters on July 17. That range would place it well ahead of Nolan’s own “Oppenheimer,” which was projected in the 40 to 50 million dollar range before ultimately opening to 82.4 million dollars.
Notably, ‘The Odyssey’ also holds the distinction of being the first film ever shot entirely using IMAX cameras, a technical milestone Nolan has described as one of the great satisfactions of his career, adding that he hopes the achievement inspires other filmmakers to explore the same approach.
What would you have chosen?
With the film’s global premiere tour still rolling on to additional cities in the coming weeks, Holland’s choice to skip a 1am wake up call for the World Cup speaks volumes about just how significant this moment feels for him personally. Whether England’s tournament run continues without his late-night viewership remains to be seen, but for Holland, the choice between the two was clearly not much of a contest at all.
