Transformers and G.I. Joe Unite in New Series, Reportedly Set Within Energon Universe

A new Transformers and G.I. Joe series could soon be heading to a streaming platform. The show is said to be based on the Energon Universe, which connects several comic book titles under Skybound Entertainment, including Void Rivals, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. The news was first reported by Bleeding Cool, a comic industry site known for sharing early scoops.

According to journalist Rich Johnston, who wrote the report, trusted sources within the industry confirmed that Robert Kirkman’s Skybound has sold a series that combines the Transformers and G.I. Joe properties. “Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment’s next big news is that they have sold a new Transformers/GI Joe shared universe animated streaming series,” Johnston wrote. He also mentioned that an official announcement may come at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Skybound, led by Kirkman, has already delivered successful projects in both comics and TV, such as The Walking Dead and Invincible. So the idea of the company expanding into another large franchise makes sense.

In the past, Hasbro licensed the Transformers and G.I. Joe comics to IDW Publishing. But in 2021, those rights were pulled. Not long after, Kirkman’s Skybound took over and launched a new universe of stories through Image Comics. The launch began with Void Rivals, a sci-fi comic that introduced new characters and slowly brought in the Transformers. The shared world, now called the Energon Universe, has since grown to include stories focused on G.I. Joe characters like Duke and Destro.

With Transformers about to hit its two-year mark and G.I. Joe wrapping up its first year in this new timeline, the arrival of a streaming series could be the next big step. Johnston also hinted that something major is coming to the comics themselves, writing, “They are promising something rather shocking, a possible end ahead of a new beginning.”

Whether the series will tie directly into the current comic storylines is unclear. But Skybound often uses major conventions to drop big news, so fans will be watching closely during SDCC. If the reveal doesn’t happen there, events like New York Comic Con or TF Con Chicago might be the backup.

In my opinion, if the rumors are true, this could be a great move for both franchises. The Energon Universe has given Transformers and G.I. Joe a fresh start in the comics, and a show could bring in even more fans. What do you think about a shared Transformers and G.I. Joe series? Let us know in the comments below.
