‘Violent Night 2’ Trailer Brings Kristen Bell’s Mrs. Claus Into the Fight, and Santa Needs Her Help

Christmas action-comedies have carved out a surprisingly durable niche in recent years, with one particular bloody, bare-knuckle take on Santa Claus becoming an unlikely holiday classic almost overnight. That kind of sleeper success practically guarantees a sequel, but fans have spent years waiting for confirmation on when exactly that follow-up would finally arrive.

That wait officially ended this week, with a proper first look landing right as anticipation had begun to peak. What started as a modest surprise hit in 2022 has now grown into a full-fledged franchise, complete with an expanded cast and a mythology ready to deepen.

Universal Pictures has released the first official trailer for ‘Violent Night 2,’ confirming David Harbour’s return as the vengeful, hard-fighting Santa Claus alongside Kristen Bell, who joins the franchise for the first time as Mrs. Claus. The film is set to hit theaters on December 4.

The trailer picks up with Harbour’s Santa stranded in a crumbling New Jersey mall, cut off from the North Pole and sapped of his usual magic, forced to dish out violent justice against a ruthless crime lord and his henchmen overrunning the town. According to the film’s official synopsis, Santa finds himself needing to rediscover his faith in goodness while calling in last-minute reinforcements from the one person no villain wants to tangle with, Mrs. Claus herself.

The trailer’s opening moments show Harbour’s Santa reflecting somberly on his past, at one point confiding to mall children that “maybe I killed too many people.” Things escalate quickly from there when it’s revealed his own elves have turned against him, sent on a mission by Jared Harris’s villain character to take him down, including a moment where Santa gets blasted out of a skyscraper window.

Just as the situation looks dire, Bell’s Mrs. Claus arrives to save the day, declaring in the trailer, “Get your own man, he’s taken,” as she swings in armed and ready to fight. Producer Kelly McCormick described how Bell came to join the franchise during a recent interview, saying that securing her felt like “divine intervention” given her existing friendship with Harbour and her busy schedule.

McCormick elaborated on what Bell brings to the role specifically. “What she does as a character is this very loving sort of push toward Santa understanding how to get back on the nice list and also kicking major ass,” McCormick told SlashFilm. “Having the permission to do that because she’s just Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus. She’s just that cool.”

The sequel reunites much of the creative team behind the original film, with director Tommy Wirkola returning alongside producers Kelly McCormick and David Leitch of 87North, the action powerhouse behind films including ‘Bullet Train,’ the ‘John Wick’ franchise, and ‘The Fall Guy.’ Screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller also return to pen the sequel.

Rounding out the expanded cast are newcomers Daniela Melchior, Joe Pantoliano, Andrew Bachelor, and AEW professional wrestler Maxwell Friedman, joining a franchise that first introduced audiences to an embittered, lethally skilled Santa forced to rescue a family from mercenaries during a Christmas Eve home invasion in the original 2022 film. The sequel has been rated R for strong, bloody violence and language, staying true to the franchise’s signature blend of holiday cheer and brutal action.

With Harbour, Bell, and the entire creative team back in the fold, ‘Violent Night 2’ looks poised to deliver another round of festive mayhem when it hits theaters this December.
