‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’ Creator Jac Schaeffer Stays Connected to Vision’s Story in ‘VisionQuest,’ Here’s How
Marvel’s small-screen trilogy centered on Vision and Wanda Maximoff has quietly become one of the studio’s most acclaimed corners of the franchise, built almost entirely on the strength of one creative voice. That voice belongs to Jac Schaeffer, and even as the story shifts hands for its final chapter, her fingerprints remain firmly attached.
Schaeffer’s career trajectory within the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been unusual in the best possible way. She wrote and created ‘WandaVision’ before going on to create and showrun ‘Agatha All Along,’ establishing herself as the architect behind some of the franchise’s most inventive and genre-bending television.
Now, as ‘VisionQuest‘ arrives to close out the trilogy she helped launch, Schaeffer is credited as an executive producer on the series rather than in her more familiar role as creator or showrunner. The series, which centers on Paul Bettany’s White Vision navigating questions of identity and memory, marks a passing of the torch from Schaeffer to writer-producer Terry Matalas, who takes over as the show’s creator and showrunner.
Matalas, known for his work on ’12 Monkeys’ and the third season of ‘Star Trek: Picard,’ developed ‘VisionQuest’ for television and wrote the series alongside Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti, and Matthew Okumura. He also shares directing duties on the project with Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, and Vincenzo Natali.
The full executive producer lineup rounds out with some of Marvel Studios’ most familiar names, including Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Mary Livanos, Matalas himself, Schaeffer, and Byrne, with Roopesh Parekh serving as producer. That’s a notably packed roster even by Marvel Television standards, reflecting the significance placed on properly closing out a trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ in 2021.
Schaeffer’s shift away from the showrunner’s chair reportedly traces back to her focus on other projects within the Marvel pipeline. Reports from earlier in the show’s development indicated that as she turned her attention to showrunning ‘Agatha All Along,’ the reins for what was then known as ‘Vision Quest’ transitioned toward Matalas, who was announced as showrunner in 2024.
‘VisionQuest’ picks up the story of White Vision, following his escape from those who sought to weaponize him and his subsequent search for meaning by consulting the artificial intelligence personas built into his own programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and Ultron. That quiet existence is interrupted when a bounty on his head forces him on the run alongside Thomas Shepard, a boy who may be a reincarnated version of his son.
James Spader returns as Ultron for the series, joining Bettany at the center of a cast that also includes Ruaridh Mollica, Todd Stashwick, T’Nia Miller, Orla Brady, and Emily Hampshire, among others. The show made its first public appearance at D23, where Bettany and Spader joined Feige on stage before the trailer’s debut.
For longtime fans of the trilogy, seeing Schaeffer’s name remain attached to the project, even in a reduced capacity, offers some reassurance that the creative DNA she established in ‘WandaVision’ hasn’t been lost in the transition. Her work on that original series and its ‘Agatha All Along’ follow-up helped define a distinct tone within Marvel’s television output, one built around emotional depth wrapped in genre experimentation.
‘VisionQuest’ is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, closing out a story that has spanned five years and multiple creative hands. Whether Schaeffer’s continued involvement behind the scenes shapes the final product in any noticeable way remains to be seen once the series actually arrives.
