Who’s the Mole in ‘Lioness’ Season 3? Every Theory, Twist, and Suspect Explained
‘Lioness’ built its entire third season around a single, gnawing question: who inside the system betrayed Joe McNamara. Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ espionage drama has spent the run splitting its story across two timelines, showing both the fallout of Joe’s abduction and the mission months earlier that seemingly set it all in motion.
That structure kept viewers guessing for weeks about who was really pulling the strings behind the attacks on Joe’s team and, eventually, on her own family. Fan theories multiplied episode by episode, with names shifting as new information reshaped what audiences thought they knew about the season’s central conspiracy.
The mystery took its first major turn when the show revealed that Russia wasn’t actually behind Joe’s kidnapping at all. Instead, the season’s sixth episode introduced a mysterious operative named Babat working on behalf of Iran, retaliating for a mission Joe led back in the show’s second season, a reveal that upended weeks of assumptions about who the real threat had been all along.
That twist didn’t put the mole question to rest, though, since someone inside the agency still had to be feeding information to whoever was hunting Joe in the present day. The show’s penultimate episode leaned hard into the theory that Ukrainian FISU agent Oleksandra Balakin was the culprit, framing the reveal around Joe’s own reference earlier in the season to Occam’s razor, the idea that the simplest explanation is usually correct.
Not everyone is convinced Oleksandra is the whole story, though. Ready Steady Cut has laid out a detailed case for a very different suspect, arguing that Nicole Kidman’s Kaitlyn Meade fits the role on a thematic level even if the hard evidence against her is thinner.
The argument centers on Kaitlyn’s unique position within the CIA’s chain of command, which gives her the access needed to steer major decisions from behind the scenes. The season has also gone out of its way to make Joe’s ordeal personal, with her husband and children pulled into the danger, and a betrayal from someone as close to the family as Kaitlyn would land with far more weight than one from an already-compromised foreign asset like Oleksandra.
Specific beats fuel the theory too, including how quickly Kaitlyn moved to eliminate Oleksandra once a think tank analysis from her husband Errol implicated a mole inside U.S. intelligence, and how deliberately she stayed away from the office during the mission to rescue Joe. There’s also a counter-theory floating around suggesting Kaitlyn and Joe orchestrated an unauthorized operation together, using Joe as bait to smoke out the real culprit, which would let both Oleksandra and a deeper conspiracy stay in play at once.

Beyond Kaitlyn and Oleksandra, online chatter has floated other candidates worth watching, including QRF team member Cody Spears, whose history with Joe and reactions throughout the season have drawn scrutiny from viewers piecing together the clues themselves. None of those theories carry the same weight as the Oleksandra reveal or the case built around Kaitlyn, but they reflect just how thoroughly ‘Lioness’ has scattered red herrings across its final stretch.
With only the season finale left to resolve the mystery, the show has left itself plenty of room to pull one more reversal before the credits roll. Whether the real answer turns out to be the simplest one or something far closer to home, ‘Lioness’ has made sure nobody watching is entirely certain yet.
