Wladimir Klitschko’s Birthday Tribute to Hayden Panettiere Is Breaking Hearts
Hayden Panettiere built her career on roles that made her feel like a permanent fixture in pop culture, from her breakout turn as a cheerleader with unbreakable resolve in ‘Heroes’ to years spent charming audiences on ‘Nashville.’ Her presence on screen carried a kind of warmth that made her instantly recognizable to an entire generation of fans.
That warmth has taken on a much heavier meaning this week. Panettiere died on August 16 at age 36, and in the days since, tributes from those closest to her have continued rolling in as friends, family, and former partners try to process the loss.
Hayden Panettiere’s ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko has shared a heartfelt message on the late star’s 37th birthday, writing “You are loved” in a tribute posted five days after her death. The retired boxing champion, who shares 11-year-old daughter Kaya with Panettiere, posted the message alongside a photo of the actress on Instagram, marking what would have been her birthday with reflection rather than celebration.
“Today is Hayden’s birthday. Instead of celebrating the way we had planned, today we celebrate her life, her spirit, and the love she brought into this world,” Klitschko wrote in the post. He went on to thank Panettiere’s fans and friends for their support during an especially difficult stretch, noting that the outpouring of kindness had reminded him there’s still good in the world even amid deep sadness.
Klitschko used part of the message to encourage others to act on that same sense of connection. “If you’re reading this, I ask just one thing: even if only for a moment, think about LOVE. Reach out to a friend. Forgive someone. Be kind. Love is a superpower. Use it,” he wrote, before closing with a direct message to Panettiere herself: “Happy Birthday, Hayden. You are loved, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten.”
This wasn’t the first time Klitschko had spoken publicly since Panettiere’s death. He shared an earlier statement describing his “profound shock and grief,” calling her “an important part of my life and the mother of our daughter, Kaya,” and praising the career she built despite what he described as the darker sides of a demanding industry.
Panettiere and Klitschko’s relationship spanned more than a decade, beginning when they met in 2009. The couple dated on and off before getting engaged in 2013 and welcoming Kaya in December 2014, ultimately splitting in 2018 after Panettiere had spoken openly about struggling with postpartum depression and addiction, details she also revisited in her memoir published earlier this year.
Panettiere was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest inside an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have said there were no signs of foul play, though the official cause and manner of death remain under review as the investigation continues.
As fans continue processing the loss of an actress whose work shaped so much of early 2000s and 2010s television, Klitschko’s tribute offers a small window into how the people who knew Panettiere best are choosing to remember her, not by dwelling on how her story ended, but by honoring the spirit that made her so beloved in the first place.
