‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 Rotten Tomatoes Score Is In, and It Breaks Several MCU Records
The X-Men are getting ready to return, and early reactions suggest that fans are in for something special. Ahead of its Disney+ premiere on July 1, X-Men ’97 Season 2 has already made a huge impact with critics, earning a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on the first reviews.
The new season has become the highest-rated Marvel Studios project of Phase 6 so far. It has also surpassed the first season’s score, making it the highest-rated season of the animated series to date. On top of that, it currently stands as the highest-rated animated series produced by Marvel Studios.
The strong reviews come as excitement continues to build for the return of Marvel’s mutant heroes. The series serves as a continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series, which originally aired during the 1990s and became one of the most beloved superhero cartoons ever made. When X-Men ’97 debuted in 2024, many fans praised the show for staying faithful to the original while updating the story for modern audiences.

Season 2 picks up after the dramatic events of the first season. This time, the X-Men find themselves scattered across different points in history. Some characters are trapped in Ancient Egypt, while others end up in the distant future. As they struggle to reunite, they must also stop Apocalypse, one of the most powerful and dangerous villains in X-Men history.
Critics who have seen the first episodes have been extremely positive. Tessa Smith from Mama’s Geeky called the new season a major achievement. She wrote, “Incredible visuals, score, storylines, and performances. Season 2 somehow tops Season 1. Apocalypse is brought to the screen brilliantly.” Smith also praised the show for respecting its roots while continuing to evolve.
Collider’s Aidan Kelley was equally impressed. He described the series as a dream project for Marvel fans and said, “It’s a miracle that a revival like this, which gives this much care and attention to detail, even exists to begin with.”
Grace Randolph from Beyond the Trailer highlighted the show’s connection to the classic era of the X-Men. She wrote, “Like the first season, season two is a celebration of the X-Men in their peak in the 90s.” Randolph also praised the animation and voice performances.
Meanwhile, Zach Pope gave the season a score of 4.5 out of 5 and said, “Season 2 is everything you could want.” He added that the new episodes reminded him why fans fell in love with the X-Men in the first place. Pope also singled out Apocalypse, describing him as the definitive version of the character.
The cast includes several actors returning from the original animated series, including Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler. Their return has helped maintain the spirit of the original show while introducing new stories and challenges.
According to Marvel Studios Animation, the second season will consist of nine episodes. With record-breaking reviews already arriving before release and critics praising everything from the animation to the storytelling, X-Men ’97 Season 2 looks set to continue the success of one of Marvel’s most celebrated recent projects.
