Xolo Maridueña Hopes to Play Blue Beetle for 12 More Years
The next movie coming from Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios is just around the corner. After it was initially announced as the HBOMax exclusive along with ‘Batgirl,’ it was decided that ‘Blue Beetle’ would get a regular theatrical release, and ‘Batgirl’ was ultimately canceled during post-production. DC Extended Universe is currently counting its last few months of existence, but DC has also experienced a whole series of commercial flops.
Last year’s ‘The Batman’ was a commercial success, but that movie is separated from DCEU. Last year’s ‘Black Adam,’ and this year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ and ‘The Flash’ have all suffered commercial failures, and the odds aren’t looking very good for ‘Blue Beetle’ since the movie is set to release at the worst possible time. Not only that the DCEU is nearing its end, and DCU is set to begin in 2025, but the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike is preventing the actors from doing any interviews, promotional work, or red-carpet events while the strike is ongoing.
The ‘Blue Beetle’ star hopes he’s got a long future as the DC character ahead!
Still, even though ‘Blue Beetle’ might potentially become DC’s newest box-office flop, James Gunn and Peter Safran seem to have big plans for the main star Xolo Maridueña and his Blue Beetle in the future. Gunn recently confirmed that even though DCU isn’t officially set to begin until July 2025, Blue Beetle would be the first official superhero of the soft-reboot franchise.
The whole thing is still confusing for many DC fans, especially since Gal Gadot announced her return as Wonder Woman, but still, Maridueña expressed his excitement for the upcoming movie, and he already has high hopes of playing the character for a long, long time, as he recently revealed for Entertainment Weekly
“I think what surprised me the most was reading the script before filming the movie. This is a Latino character, and I was curious how far we were going to lean into it, what elements we were going to show. How were we going to deliver on that big ask? Honestly, I was just jaw-droppingly blown away. It was a cathartic experience reading the script because I had the realization that my whole upbringing…
I mean, every family dinner that was placed on the table, I wasn’t calling it Mexican food, right? I was just calling it dinner. I was just calling it food. And I had that same homey feeling [while reading the script]. The family felt natural, even though it wasn’t my own family.
I could understand every one of the characters and feel that familial love. I was really surprised at how well they were able to capture that. And then, bringing it onto the screen was 10 times better because you’ve got f—ing George Lopez and Adriana Barraza and Belissa Escobedo, so it was just the most fun filming. I want to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle.”

There’s no doubt that the ‘Cobra Kai’ star is looking forward to his DC debut, and from the trailers, it looks like the movie could be a really fun ride. Director Angel Manuel Soto recently revealed that there are already plans for Blue Beetle to get a trilogy, but even if the movie gets positive reviews, who knows how much it will matter if the movie turns out to be another commercial failure. We aren’t trying to jinx it, but the numbers speak for themselves.
The ‘Blue Beetle’ movie follows a college graduate Jaime Reyes as he returns to his hometown, where he is chosen by the Scarab, which turns him into a superhero known as the Blue Beetle. As it usually goes, Jaime will need to answer his superhero call as the forces of evil, including Victoria Kord, who wants to take the Scarab for herself, arise.
‘Blue Beetle’ is opening in theaters on August 18, 2023.
