DCEU’s planned ‘Superman’ trilogy was cut short after the release of ‘Black Adam.’ Following the post-credit scene that teased Man of Steel’s future within the DCEU, it was surprisingly revealed that the cinematic universe will be rebooted and that Cavill will be recast, his story cut short.

James Gunn then started his own cinematic universe, dubbed DCU introducing David Corenswet as Clark Kent, a younger Superman with his own story to tell.

Fans were understandably outraged, especially since quite a lot of fans took a liking to Cavill’s brooding and darker Superman, despite the actor receiving mixed reviews at best for his portrayal in ‘Man of Steel.’ Now in a new interview with GQ, Zack Snyder finally revealed how Superman’s story would end in his ill-fated DCEU.

He was going to have to succumb to the Anti-life, be destroyed, turn the clock back, and then get his chance for this battle against Darkseid. If you will… that would have finished his trilogy of becoming this guardian, and sort of, return him to his humanity.

Despite there still being the possibility for this story to be told under the ‘Elseworlds’ banner, just as Pattison’s Batman will continue, Cavill already moved to different projects and so did Snyder.

Snyder’s take on the character was highly controversial, the majority of fans didn’t like how Cavill killed Zod. Snyder also recently cleared up how Superman’s character is fake, and not a true protector if he can’t kill Zod, if he is not faced with difficult choices that highlight his humanity, he’s not interesting. So presumably, the whole Superman’s story arc would be about difficult choices and revealing the human within him. He also made a similar comment on Batman’s character.
