Zendaya Finally Speaks Out After Rue’s Shocking Fate in the ‘Euphoria’ Finale
Zendaya has finally spoken about the emotional ending of Euphoria after the HBO series ended with the shocking death of her character, Rue.
According to footage shown after the season finale aired on May 31, Zendaya addressed the cast and crew on her final day of filming. The actress, who has played Rue since the show first premiered, became emotional while thanking everyone who worked on the series.
“I want to say thank you. I’m really grateful for every single one of you,” Zendaya said.
She continued by reflecting on how long she has been part of the show and the people who have been there with her throughout the journey.
“Many of you have been here from the beginning and have watched me grow up,” she said. “It’s been such a pleasure and an honor. Thank you so much.”
Zendaya’s farewell came after one of the most dramatic episodes in the show’s history. The finale revealed that Rue did not survive. In the episode, Alamo, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, discovered that Rue had been secretly working against him. After learning the truth, he gave her painkillers that were laced with fentanyl. Rue later overdosed and died during the episode.
The story then shifted to Ali, played by Colman Domingo. After finding Rue dead on his couch, Ali set out to get revenge on Alamo. The final scenes took place at the farm where Rue had spent time earlier in the season. There, Ali honored her memory while sitting at the dinner table and saying grace.
The decision to kill off Rue has already sparked strong reactions from fans, but Euphoria creator Sam Levinson says the ending was planned with a bigger message in mind.
Speaking in the same post-episode segment, Levinson praised Zendaya for her work on the series.
“Zendaya’s performance has been so wonderful and layered over the course of these seasons. We fell in love with this character — this girl who was flawed and f**ked up but has a good heart,” he said.
Levinson explained that Rue’s fate was connected to the show’s long-running focus on addiction and its consequences.

“In the end, I wanted to tell an honest story about addiction. I also wanted to tell a story about grief and the emotional turmoil that it can create,” he said.
The writer and director also described the finale as the most truthful ending for the character.
“The honest ending is that people like Rue don’t make it,” Levinson said. “People relapse and they f** up. They’re not ready to get clean. And they weren’t dying like they are now with the influx of fentanyl into this country.”
Levinson also referenced the death of actor Angus Cloud, who died in July 2025 following an accidental overdose. He said the reality of addiction today influenced how he wanted to end Rue’s story.
“There’s no reason to sugarcoat it. I wanted to tell the story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance,” Levinson said.
The information was shared in HBO’s post-finale segment that aired after the final episode of Euphoria. The complete series is now streaming on HBO Max.
