Netflix is going all out on The Witcher Season 4, even with a new lead actor, Liam Hemsworth, taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia.

According to Redanian Intelligence, this upcoming season has become the most expensive in the series’ history, with a reported budget of $221 million. That’s a huge jump from Season 2, which cost just over $176 million.

Breaking it down, that’s about $27 million per episode. Only Netflix’s hit show Stranger Things has a higher per-episode spend, with Season 4 of that series costing $30 million per episode.

For a show like The Witcher, which has faced ups and downs in popularity, this is a bold move by Netflix.

The massive budget could show that Netflix is confident in the new season’s potential, or it could be an attempt to recapture the excitement the show had during its first season.

Either way, Season 4, set to premiere on October 30, 2025, is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s priciest productions. The series was already renewed for a fifth and final season in April 2024.

Looking back, The Witcher’s third season received mixed reactions. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 79% approval rating, with an average score of 7.1/10. The site noted, “Capably shouldered by Henry Cavill’s gruff charm, The Witcher’s plotty third season pays a fittingly fond farewell to this particular Geralt of Rivia.” Metacritic showed generally favorable reviews as well, with scores of 71 out of 100 for the first five episodes and 65 out of 100 for the last three.

Despite positive critical reception, the show’s viewership dipped. The first batch of episodes in Season 3 saw a 30% drop compared to the previous season, showing that the series’ popularity isn’t as strong as it once was.

It will be interesting to see if Netflix’s huge investment pays off. Do you think Season 4 can bring The Witcher back to its former glory, or is the series past its peak? Share your thoughts in the comments.
