Disney+ Brings ‘Afterlife With Archie’ to Life in New Series
Archie and his friends are returning to screens, but this time, Riverdale will look very different. Disney+ is developing Afterlife With Archie, a new hourlong drama series based on the popular Archie comic book series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, according to Deadline.
The show has already received a script-to-series commitment.
The series will reimagine the familiar town of Riverdale as a dark, apocalyptic world filled with zombies and chaos.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who created the original comic series, is writing the show. He will also executive produce along with Jimmy Gibbons through his Muckle Man Productions. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will executive produce for Berlanti Productions, while Jon Goldwater will produce for Archie Comics Studios.
Aguirre-Sacasa has a long history with Archie Comics. He wrote two best-selling horror comic series, Afterlife With Archie and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, before becoming the publisher’s Chief Creative Officer in 2014.
He also worked on Riverdale, which started at Fox and later moved to the CW, running for seven seasons and leading to the spin-off Katy Keene. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ran on Netflix for four seasons, totaling 36 episodes. Now, Afterlife With Archie is getting its own TV adaptation.
This new series represents one of Warner Bros. Television’s biggest development deals at Disney+, according to Deadline. It also marks a second major streaming project for Berlanti Productions and WBTV at Disney this year, following Foster Dade, a project written by Berlanti and Bash Doran, which received a pilot order at Hulu.
