Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson Tease Possible Reunion in a Legendary Show
Matthew McConaughey has shared that he and Woody Harrelson have talked about possibly returning to True Detective for a new story.
In a recent conversation, reported by NME, the actor said that both he and Harrelson are open to revisiting their iconic roles as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, but only if the script lives up to their high standards.
The show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto, reportedly discussed the idea with McConaughey earlier this year.
According to McConaughey, nothing is official yet, but the interest is definitely there. “There’s excitement, yes, but I haven’t seen a script yet,” he said. “When I [originally] read True Detective, everything that came out of Rust Cohle’s mouth was white-hot. The script was on fire so the execution [of a sequel] must go another step.”
He added that he and Harrelson would only return if the writing met their expectations. “We’re keen on the idea but it’s nothing more than an idea. If Nic puts something on paper that Woody and I think is good enough, it wouldn’t even be a choice. We would look at it and go, ‘it must happen’. It’s gotta be damn good though because we set a pretty good precedent!”
The original season of True Detective, which aired in 2014, became a major success and is still praised as one of television’s best crime dramas.
Fans have been hoping for years to see the two actors reunite on screen as the troubled detectives who helped define the show’s tone.
Meanwhile, True Detective is moving ahead with its fifth season. Showrunner Issa López, who directed the recent Night Country season, is returning to lead the new installment. Filming is expected to start this year, and the season is scheduled to air in 2027. Reports from Variety in August also revealed that Nicolas Cage is currently in talks to join the cast.
If McConaughey and Harrelson do return, it would mark a major comeback for the series’ original duo and possibly a return to the haunting atmosphere that made the first season a classic. For now, fans can only wait and hope that Nic Pizzolatto’s next idea sparks the same magic again.
