Tom Hopper Claflin has hinted he would love to return to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, despite his surprise exit in On Stranger Tides.

Speaking to ComicBook about his new Prime Video series Lazarus, Claflin shared his excitement about revisiting his role as Philip Swift and potentially reuniting with Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, who played his on-screen love interest, the mermaid Syrena. “Let’s beg the producers, because I would love to revisit that world again,” he said.

Claflin also reflected on his first experience working on the blockbuster. He explained that filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was a major learning curve for him. “It was my first ever film. I’d done a bit of TV before, but as a film experience, I was so nervous. I was like a deer in headlights.”

“I didn’t know what was happening. And you know what a scare. What a sort of stage to step onto when you don’t really know what’s going on. And so I took myself and the job so seriously and it deserved it in many ways. And Philip is that kind of character,” Claflin told ComicBook.

He admitted that, looking back, he wishes he had relaxed more on set. “God, I wish I just had more fun. Like, I just I just wish I allowed myself to just sort of enjoy it and, and relish every single moment. So I would love the opportunity to kind of get back on the pirate ship. I mean that would be a dream come true for me. But unfortunately it’s not in my hands. So, Jerry Bruckheimer, if you’re watching this, make it happen.”

Although it seems unlikely that Philip Swift will return, Claflin’s character has never been fully closed off. It has been fourteen years since his last appearance, and the films have a history of bringing back characters even after long absences.

Geoffrey Rush’s Captain Barbossa, for instance, returned multiple times after dying in the first film. Other characters, like Damian O’Hare’s Lieutenant Gillette, also reappeared after long gaps, and the franchise has teased Davy Jones’ potential return.

Given this history, fans might still hold out hope. Claflin’s enthusiasm shows that some actors are ready to set sail again if the chance arises.
