It looks like Stranger Things is going out with a big bang, and not just on Netflix. According to a new report from Puck News, the series finale of the hit sci-fi show will be shown in theaters on the same day it premieres on Netflix.

The two-hour finale is expected to hit AMC Theatres and other major chains on December 31, marking the first time Stranger Things has had a theatrical release. The report adds that while the deal hasn’t been officially signed yet, it’s already in motion.

This news comes shortly after the Duffer Brothers, the show’s creators, told Variety they had asked Netflix for a theatrical release but were turned down.

“We asked for theaters and were shot down,” they said at the time. But according to Puck News, that interview was done weeks before talks with theater chains had progressed, so it seems the plan has changed since then.

Earlier reports also hinted at Netflix and AMC exploring new theatrical collaborations after working together on other special events. Now, it looks like Stranger Things will be part of that expansion.

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things, officially titled Stranger Things 5, will be released in three parts. The first two volumes are scheduled to arrive on November 26 and December 25, with the finale closing out the year on December 31.

The season will have eight episodes and will once again be produced by the Duffer Brothers, Shawn Levy, and Dan Cohen.

The main cast returns for the final chapter, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, and others. Amybeth McNulty joins the main cast this season, and Terminator star Linda Hamilton is also joining as a newcomer.

Set in the fall of 1987, the new season follows the Hawkins gang as they face off against Vecna once again. With the Rifts still open and the military closing in on Eleven, the group must come together for one last fight as the town faces its deadliest threat yet.

If all goes according to plan, fans will get to experience that final showdown both at home and on the big screen.
