Netflix Reportedly Developing Animated Series Based on a Popular Video Game Franchise
Netflix may soon bring a familiar face from the gaming world to the small screen. According to a report from What’s on Netflix, the streaming giant is “quietly developing” an animated series centered on Crash Bandicoot, the energetic orange marsupial who became one of PlayStation’s most iconic characters.
The show is reportedly being produced by WildBrain, the animation studio behind several of Netflix’s hit series such as Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising, and Carmen Sandiego. WildBrain is also currently working on a Minecraft animated series for the streamer, adding to its growing list of game-based projects.
For now, there aren’t many details about the new Crash Bandicoot series. It’s not yet clear if the show will retell the story from the classic games or explore a completely new adventure.
Crash Bandicoot first appeared in 1996, created by Naughty Dog — the same studio known for The Last of Us. The series began as a PlayStation exclusive before expanding to other consoles over the years. After 2008’s Crash: Mind Over Mutant, the franchise went quiet for a long time until 2017, when the remastered Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy revived interest in the series.
In 2020, Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time was released to positive reviews but reportedly didn’t sell as well as publisher Activision had hoped. Plans for a follow-up game were canceled, and since then, fans have only seen smaller releases like a mobile title and the multiplayer game Crash Team Rumble.
This wouldn’t be the first time Crash appeared on Netflix, either. The character made brief appearances in Skylanders Academy, another animated series based on Activision’s games.
If the project goes forward, it will join Netflix’s growing lineup of shows inspired by popular video games, including upcoming series based on Horizon and Assassin’s Creed.
