2026 Lands Its First Billion-Dollar Hit at the Global Box Office
A 2026 animated blockbuster has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office. This makes it the first film of the year to reach that level. The movie is a sequel to a highly successful video game adaptation released in 2023, which also became a worldwide hit with nearly $1.4 billion in earnings.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The new film continues the strong partnership between Nintendo and Illumination, with Universal Pictures handling distribution. It was made on a budget of about $110 million, which is considered low for a large-scale animated blockbuster. Because of its massive earnings compared to its budget, the film is already seen as extremely profitable.
The voice cast brings back several familiar actors from the first movie. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, while Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach. Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, and Jack Black also reprise their roles. New additions to the cast include Donald Glover, Glen Powell, Benny Safdie, and Brie Larson. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who also directed the previous installment.
The story follows Mario, Luigi, and their friends as they travel into space. In this new adventure, they face Bowser and his son Bowser Jr. The mission revolves around protecting Princess Rosalina and stopping a larger threat in the universe. The film draws inspiration from Nintendo’s “Super Mario Galaxy” games, along with other Nintendo franchises such as Star Fox.
The movie premiered in Kyoto at Minami-za on March 28. It was later released in the United States on April 1 by Universal Pictures. While critics had mixed to negative reactions, audiences responded very differently, and the film performed strongly in theaters. It quickly built momentum at the global box office and eventually crossed the $1 billion threshold.
According to the report, the success of the film continues a trend for Illumination, a studio known for consistent box office hits. Its past releases include “Despicable Me,” “Sing,” “The Secret Life of Pets,” “The Lorax,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” The studio’s partnership with Nintendo has now produced two major blockbuster successes in a row.

The film’s performance has also boosted confidence in future projects. Universal’s upcoming slate includes major titles such as Steven Spielberg’s “Disclosure Day,” Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” and Illumination’s “Minions & Monsters.” Industry watchers believe the success of the Mario franchise will encourage more films based on popular video games.
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is currently the highest-grossing film of 2026. It is followed by titles like “Michael,” “Project Hail Mary,” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.” With its strong box office performance, it has become one of the most successful video game adaptations in cinema history, second only to its predecessor.
