James Cameron Teases “Ethical AI” Could Make Future ‘Avatar’ Films Faster
James Cameron is considering the use of generative AI in future Avatar movies, but only under strict ethical rules. In an interview with Deadline, Cameron emphasized that any AI would be used to support filmmakers, not replace actors or compromise the creative process.
At a recent Los Angeles screening of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Cameron explained why he’s decided to show audiences the behind-the-scenes process of making the films. He wanted to highlight the human effort, particularly the motion capture work of actors like Sam Worthington, and to correct misconceptions that AI was involved.
“We realized that people were starting to conflate our process with AI,” Cameron said. He stressed that none of the Avatar films have used AI so far. His concern is that generative AI could be powerful but must be handled carefully. “We just need to tame it, and we need to use it ethically,” he added.
Cameron said he’s interested in using AI for repetitive tasks in visual effects that can be tedious and time-consuming. This could help lower costs and speed up production. “I think we’re going to have to generate these tools ourselves… within very specific guardrails that don’t intrude on the artist, the writer, or the actor,” he explained.
The director is also careful about protecting the director-actor relationship. He warned that AI should never replace actors or make new directors skip learning how to work with real performers. “I’ll be very vocal… I want to make sure that we’re not replacing actors, and that we’re not bringing up a next generation of directors that think they can cut out the acting part of the process,” Cameron said.
Cameron and Worthington, who has worked on Avatar for over a decade, also shared moments from the production, showing how much effort goes into even small physical details. Worthington described it as a process of constant problem-solving. “The process is always problem-solving. And it’s often something so out of the box it leads down to these kind of moments,” he said.
