Leonardo DiCaprio was already a huge name in Hollywood before the year 2000. Roles in movies like The Basketball Diaries and Romeo + Juliet made critics take him seriously. Then Titanic arrived in 1997 and turned him into a worldwide star almost overnight. After that, DiCaprio could say yes or no to nearly anything he wanted.

As his fame grew, he became careful about the projects he chose. After the mixed reaction to The Beach in 2000, DiCaprio wanted his next move to matter. He was looking for roles that felt important and challenging, not just big and loud. Around that time, he received a major offer that surprised many fans.

According to interviews DiCaprio later gave to outlets like ShortList, George Lucas personally approached him about joining the Star Wars prequels. Lucas reportedly wanted DiCaprio to play Anakin Skywalker in the second and third films of the trilogy. It was one of the biggest roles available in Hollywood at the time.

Despite the size of the opportunity, DiCaprio said no. Looking back, he explained that the timing did not feel right. He said he was not ready to jump into something that massive and long-term. In past interviews, he admitted he did not feel prepared for the pressure that comes with being the face of a franchise like Star Wars.

This was not the first time DiCaprio stepped away from a superhero-style role. He has also said that he passed on playing Robin in Batman Forever. Not long after that, he was considered for Spider-Man before the role went to his friend Tobey Maguire. Each time, DiCaprio felt the same hesitation about wearing a suit and committing to a franchise world.

Instead of joining Star Wars, DiCaprio made a very different choice. In 2002, the same year Hayden Christensen appeared as Anakin Skywalker, DiCaprio starred in Gangs of New York. The film was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Daniel Day-Lewis. That project marked the beginning of a long and successful partnership between DiCaprio and Scorsese.

Over the years, that decision shaped the rest of his career. He went on to make films like The Aviator, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. His focus stayed on character-driven stories rather than franchises.

More recently, DiCaprio has stayed busy. His latest film, One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, earned strong reviews and a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globes. He has been attending events with co-stars Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti as the film continues to gain attention.

Looking ahead, industry reports say DiCaprio is preparing to reunite with Martin Scorsese once again. Their next film, What Happens at Night, is expected to begin filming in 2026 and will also star Jennifer Lawrence and Mads Mikkelsen. The story follows a couple traveling through a snowy European town and promises another intense, dramatic role.
