Emily Blunt Opens up About the Movie Genre She Can’t Stand
Emily Blunt has built a career playing fearless characters, but when it comes to horror movies, she admits she’s actually terrified. Despite starring in the A Quiet Place films, the English actress says she genuinely dislikes scary movies.
Some of Hollywood’s biggest horror stars feel the same way. Jamie Lee Curtis and Neve Campbell have both admitted they avoid watching the very films that made them famous. Blunt’s case shows that performing fear on screen is very different from enjoying it as an audience member.
Blunt’s first real horror role came in 2007 with Wind Chill. She took the part mostly to impress her teenage brother, who thought it was exciting that she was trying something darker.
“I wanted to see if I could realistically show total fear without letting my own anxieties get in the way,” she said. She calls herself a “wuss” when it comes to watching scary films, but that hasn’t stopped her from delivering some of the most convincing performances in modern horror.
Her choice to star in A Quiet Place was influenced by her husband, John Krasinski, who co-wrote and directed the film. Even though she dislikes being scared, Blunt says the challenge of playing a character in high-stakes situations pushes her creatively.
Outside of horror, Blunt is enjoying a major career peak. She recently earned a Golden Globe nomination for her supporting role in the MMA biopic The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie and starring Dwayne Johnson. She joked about the transformation she went through for the role, saying it “should have been sponsored by WonderBra.”
Looking ahead, Blunt has a packed schedule. She will star in Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi epic Disclosure Day, set for release on June 12, alongside Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo.
The film centers on a global alien invasion, and a Super Bowl trailer featuring Blunt speaking in an alien language has already gone viral. Fans are also excited for The Devil Wears Prada 2, which hits theaters on May 1. Blunt will reprise her role as a high-powered executive alongside Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
Rumors continue about a potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel later this year, showing that while Blunt hates being scared, she isn’t afraid of a busy workload. Whether she’s avoiding horror or taking on ambitious new projects, Emily Blunt continues to prove she can handle fear on screen while keeping her personal tastes intact.
