In 1994, Hollywood got a rare pairing when Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt starred together in the gothic vampire film Interview with the Vampire. Cruise played Lestat de Lioncourt, the bold and charismatic vampire, while Pitt portrayed Louis de Pointe du Lac, a man forced into immortality against his will.

The film also featured a young Kirsten Dunst and Christian Slater, and it was well-received, earning two Academy Award nominations. Despite the film’s success, Pitt has been open about how difficult the experience was for him.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said he spent six months in the dark, cold London winter at Pinewood Studios, an environment that was so bleak it nearly made him quit. “It was just miserable,” Pitt admitted.

Part of the tension came from the roles themselves. Pitt felt that the script put most of the attention on Cruise’s Lestat, leaving his character, Louis, in the shadows. “I just sat and watched Cruise take center stage,” he explained, pointing out that the philosophical depth of Louis in Anne Rice’s original book was largely lost in the movie.

The differences weren’t just about the characters. Pitt once described the two actors’ personalities by saying they walk in different directions, comparing Cruise to the North Pole and himself to the South.

He also mentioned an unspoken sense of competition on set, which made it hard for them to connect. Still, Pitt clarified that it wasn’t hostile. He praised Cruise as a talented actor who often takes unfair criticism because he is at the top of the industry.

Pitt’s approach to co-stars has remained selective over the years. Actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson revealed that Pitt keeps a list of actors he chooses not to work with, prioritizing a positive and enjoyable work environment in his later career.

Today, Pitt seems to be embracing projects that give him creative freedom. He is currently filming the intense drama The Riders in Greece, where he was recently seen on the island of Hydra looking battered and bloody for a dramatic scene.

Directed by Edward Berger, the film tells the story of a father traveling across Europe in search of his missing family and is expected to be a major awards contender next year. In addition, Pitt has wrapped production on The Adventures of Cliff Booth, a Netflix sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, directed by David Fincher.

With these projects, he seems to have found roles that let him focus on characters he connects with, rather than getting caught in behind-the-scenes rivalries. After years of ups and downs in Hollywood, Pitt now appears to be prioritizing work that challenges him creatively while keeping the process enjoyable.
