Nicole Kidman Reveals the Role That Required Her To Change Her Look
Nicole Kidman recently opened up about her iconic role as Virginia Woolf in the 2002 film The Hours. The performance earned her an Academy Award, but for years, fans and critics have debated whether her win was about her acting or the prosthetic nose she wore for the part.
Kidman, however, says she doesn’t let that criticism bother her and remains proud of the creative choices behind the film.“Whatever. People are always going to say whatever,”, referring to the ongoing chatter about the role.
She explained that the physical transformation was a deliberate decision made alongside director Stephen Daldry and costume designer Ann Roth, and it was all about capturing the essence of the historical figure she was portraying.
For Kidman, acting has always been about disappearing into a character. “If that means changing my physical appearance? Of course. You have to walk differently, breathe differently, talk differently,” she said.
She added that the external changes are just a reflection of internal shifts, and that fully inhabiting a role requires attention to every detail. “I’ve been trained as a character actor, so therefore when I’m working, I’m not here to be Nicole,” she explained.
This philosophy has guided her throughout a career filled with bold and challenging choices. These days, Kidman continues to keep busy with both acting and producing. She stars as an Italian-American coroner in the new Prime Video series Scarpetta, which premiered on March 11.
The show, which also features Jamie Lee Curtis and Bobby Cannavale, has been praised for its suspenseful storytelling and dual timelines. Critics have highlighted Kidman’s performance as a standout element that brings depth to the series.
Later this year, fans can look forward to Practical Magic 2, the sequel to the 1998 cult classic. Kidman will reprise her role as Gillian Owens alongside Sandra Bullock, and the cast will expand with new additions, including Joey King and Maisie Williams.
The project marks a return to a beloved fantasy world and has generated excitement among fans who have been waiting for decades for the sequel. In addition to acting, Kidman’s production company, Blossom Films, remains highly active.
One upcoming project includes an Apple TV+ adaptation of Margo’s Got Money Troubles, starring Elle Fanning, which is set to premiere on April 15. Through her work behind the camera, Kidman continues to champion stories that are character-driven, nuanced, and meaningful.
