Miley Cyrus Reveals Raw Truth About Her Wild Past and Road to Sobriety
Miley Cyrus is reflecting on her past and her path to sobriety as she celebrates the 20th anniversary of “Hannah Montana” in a new interview for Variety. The Disney Channel show launched her into superstardom, and Cyrus says that the fame and pressures of her early career led her to experiment with drugs and alcohol.
“It’s no surprise that I had my experiences with drugs and alcohol,” Cyrus told Variety. “I was so used to living at a high, and I don’t think I ever learned how to come down from that. Now, through a sober lens, I can have compassion and understanding for myself.”
Cyrus credits therapy and EMDR, a type of psychotherapy using guided eye movement, with helping her face her anxiety and overcome stage fright. She says that in the past, performing would completely freeze her, but now she can step on stage with confidence. “You didn’t see any nerves, right? In the past, that would have taken over my entire body. I would have been frozen.”
The singer and actress started her sobriety journey during the pandemic, in her mid-twenties. She says it gave her clarity and the ability to appreciate life in a different way. “I actually miss and love live shows, but me being on the road for six months out of the year and leaving my family and my normalcy and my routine is just not best for me,” she explains.
Cyrus’ return to her Hannah Montana persona marks a reflection on both her past and present. While performing songs like “This Is the Life” and “The Best of Both Worlds” for a Disney+ anniversary special, she emphasizes that the celebration is about feeling seen and connecting with fans. “My entire life is because of that loyalty,” she says.
Looking back on her earlier years, Cyrus says she never regrets the choices she made. From the intense scrutiny of teen fame to rebellious acts like the infamous 2013 VMAs performance, she views those experiences as part of her growth. “Regret is so in the past and pointless,” she says.
Despite the challenges of fame and personal struggles, Cyrus says she has found balance in her life today. She is engaged to musician Maxx Morando, enjoys a successful career, and has reclaimed her connection to Hannah Montana. “I can actually have it all,” she says.
Cyrus hopes her story inspires others to take care of themselves and understand the importance of sobriety and self-compassion.
