Richard Hatch, the winner of the very first season of Survivor, is speaking out after actress Lisa Kudrow made some sharp comments about his win. Hatch, who took home the first million-dollar prize in 2000, shared his thoughts in response to Kudrow’s recent interview.

Kudrow, known for her role on Friends, was talking to The Hollywood Reporter about her satirical show, The Comeback. She brought up the finale of Survivor’s first season and didn’t hold back her feelings about Hatch’s victory.

“I saw the very first season of Survivor and loved it. What a phenomenal show, but the guy who won was despicable. How do people say that he played a better game, worthy of $1 million?

Why aren’t you rewarding the person who played a great game, didn’t stoop to his level, and was a shining example of humanity? That person should get $1 million. I remember thinking, ‘This is the end of civilization.’”

Hatch responded to these remarks on March 18, speaking to Men’s Journal. He said he was disappointed in Kudrow. “I’m disappointed in Lisa. It is ironic that someone so richly rewarded for playing roles and celebrating superficiality feels comfortable imagining she has any idea who I am.”

The 64-year-old reality TV veteran said her reaction is similar to how some early viewers felt before they understood Survivor’s strategy. “Lisa’s comment is reminiscent of so many viewers 25 years ago who lacked the presence of mind to understand the beautiful game of Survivor,” he told the magazine.

He added that over time, more people have come to appreciate his smart and strategic gameplay. “Long ago now, people began to understand the game’s rules and credit me for having so quickly figured out how to play so well.”

Hatch compared Survivor to professional sports, saying that strategy and deception are part of the game. “The game’s rules (outwit, outlast, outplay) are not dissimilar from other well-known, take-no-prisoners games.

Imagine a football player tapping his opponent on the shoulder to let him know he is about to tackle him. How boring would that be? We participants signed up, knowing the rules, to compete for a prize, and I won, fairly and squarely,” he said.

Even with Kudrow’s harsh comments, Hatch said he’s proud of being the first Survivor winner. “I’m very proud of my accomplishment, and were Lisa to have taken the time to learn anything about me before sharing her opinion, I’d like to think that opinion would be markedly different from the one she expressed today.”

Hatch has stayed in the public eye since his 2000 win, appearing on Survivor: All-Stars, The Celebrity Apprentice, and most recently on the 2024 reality series House of Villains. He also has a popular YouTube channel where he talks about modern Survivor seasons.

Survivor is still going strong, now celebrating its 50th season on CBS, with fan-favorite players returning. The debate over whether the winner should be a moral hero or a ruthless strategist is still a hot topic. Hatch and Kudrow’s latest clash shows that even after 25 years, the first season of Survivor continues to spark strong opinions.
