Mark Hamill Shares His Take on Luke Skywalker’s Sexuality – Is He Gay or Not?
A long-running fan question about Luke Skywalker has once again been addressed by the actor who made the role famous, Mark Hamill. In a recent interview reported by Polygon, Hamill spoke openly about how he views the character’s personal life, including a topic that fans have debated for decades.
According to Hamill, one question keeps coming up again and again: why Luke never got married. That often leads to another question about whether the character is gay. Instead of avoiding the subject, Hamill gave a direct and simple answer.
He explained that George Lucas, who created Star Wars, never clearly defined Luke’s sexuality in the films. Because of that, Hamill believes the character can be interpreted in different ways by different people. He said, “So if you want him to be gay, he is. If you don’t want him to be, he’s not. It’s whatever you want.”
Hamill has shared this view before. He spoke about it years ago when he returned to the role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, during a time when many fans were calling for more LGBTQ+ representation in big movie franchises. Despite ongoing debates about representation in entertainment, his opinion has stayed the same.
The wider Star Wars story has taken a different path over the years. In older books from the 1990s, Luke was given a clear romantic partner. The character Mara Jade, created by Timothy Zahn in the novel Heir to the Empire, became his wife in that version of the story. However, after The Walt Disney Company took control of the franchise, those books were no longer part of official canon.
At a recent fan event, writers including Claudia Gray confirmed that there are no current plans to bring Mara Jade back into the main storyline. This has caused debate among fans, especially those who liked that version of Luke’s life.
Even with these changes, Hamill says the character means different things to different people. He believes fans connect their own life experiences to the story. He explained, “When they talk about the movies, they relate it to how they saw it… They personalize it, in a way.” He added that this personal connection is part of why Star Wars has stayed popular for so many years.
He also shared a lighter story from filming Return of the Jedi with Carrie Fisher. When they learned their characters were siblings, Hamill joked about whether that made Luke part of royalty. He recalled asking, “Well, wait a minute, if I’m Leia’s brother and she’s a princess, does that make me royalty?” Fisher quickly shut the idea down, and the joke stayed with them during filming.
Hamill also talked about how surprising it is to see new generations discover Star Wars. Many younger fans still see him as Luke, even though decades have passed. He said, “I’ll be at an airport and grownups will say to their kids, ‘Look, it’s Luke Skywalker,’ and they’ll look up at me and they’re aghast! Like, ‘Oh my God, this guy really let himself go.’ They have no concept of time.”
His overall message is clear. Luke Skywalker does not have one fixed identity. Instead, the character remains open for fans to interpret in their own way.
This approach makes sense. Big characters like Luke often mean different things to different people, and that can be a strength. It lets more fans feel included and connected to the story. At the same time, some fans prefer clear answers, especially when it comes to representation. Both sides have a point. What do you think about this topic? Do you agree with Hamill’s view, or do you think the character should have a defined story? Share your thoughts in the comments.
