According to research from Cardiff University’s School of Mathematics, Sir Christopher Lee stands out as one of the most connected figures in cinema history when film industries are viewed as large social networks.

The study, led by researcher Rhyd Lewis and published under the title Who is the Centre of the Movie Universe?, used data from IMDb and computer modelling in Python to map connections between actors across film history. The goal was to measure how closely linked performers are based on who they have worked with.

Instead of focusing only on fame or box office success, the research looked at network science. It treated actors like points in a massive web, where every shared film creates a link. The study then applied different mathematical tools to measure influence within that network.

One of the simplest measurements, called Degree Centrality, counts how many different co-stars an actor has worked with. In that category, Indian actor Nassar ranked at the top due to the huge number of films and collaborators in his career.

But the more complex measurements are where Christopher Lee stood out. The study used Betweenness Centrality, which tracks how often a person acts as a bridge between others in the network. It also used Closeness Centrality, which measures how quickly someone can be linked to everyone else in the system through shared connections.

On those metrics, Lee ranked extremely high. The research found that he could be connected to almost any other actor in the database in about 2.88 steps on average. It also suggested that around 99 percent of actors could be linked to him within five steps or fewer.

This result is largely linked to the size and variety of his career. Christopher Lee worked steadily for decades, from 1948 until his death in 2015, appearing in British films, Hollywood productions, and large global franchises.

His roles in major series like The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, along with countless earlier and smaller productions, created an unusually wide range of connections in the global film industry.

At the start of his career, Lee was even told that his height could be a problem for acting opportunities. He was 6’5″, and some early feedback suggested it would limit his casting options. Instead, his career went in the opposite direction, growing into one of the most extensive filmographies in cinema history.

Although Christopher Lee passed away in 2015, his presence in film data remains significant. His work continues to appear in network studies like this, which keep his influence visible in statistical models of Hollywood and global cinema.
