Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are facing legal trouble linked to their latest Netflix crime thriller The Rip. According to 7 News Miami, a group of real-life police officers involved in the 2016 Miami narcotics case have filed a lawsuit through the actors’ production company, Artists Equity.

The film, released in January on Netflix, is “inspired by true events” and follows a fictional version of a major drug raid that uncovered millions in cash. The story reunites Damon and Affleck as law enforcement officers whose mission becomes complicated after they discover the huge amount of money.

The lawsuit claims the movie gives a false and damaging image of the real officers involved in the case. One of the lead detectives from the 2016 investigation, Jonathan Santana, said: “When you rip something, you’re stealing something. We never stole a dollar.”

Santana also said the movie has changed how people see him in real life, adding: “Pretty much saying, you know, how many buckets of money did I steal?”

Another officer’s lawyer, Ignacio Alvarez, argued that the film has harmed their reputations. He said: “They portrayed police officers as dirty, they portrayed my clients as dirty.” He also added: “My clients are now hurt for the rest of their lives with everybody perceives that they’re dirty.”

In The Rip, Damon and Affleck play officers leading a high-stakes drug raid that turns tense after they uncover a massive stash of cash. The film also features Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Scott Adkins, and Steven Yeun.

The lawsuit further claims the movie shows invented scenes involving corruption, cartel contact, and illegal actions by police. Officials say these portrayals are not accurate and have damaged public perception of those involved in the real case.
