Paul Bettany Teases Whether Ultron Could Appear in Human Form in ‘Vision Quest’
Marvel fans are getting new details about Vision Quest, and it sounds like the story will focus heavily on Vision’s identity crisis while also bringing back one of the MCU’s most iconic villains, Ultron.
The information comes from an interview with Paul Bettany, who plays Vision in the Marvel universe. He spoke about the upcoming Disney+ series during a conversation with Josh Horowitz, giving fans a better idea of what to expect without revealing too many spoilers.
When asked directly about whether Ultron could appear in human form in the series, Bettany avoided confirming anything but still gave a playful hint that fans should keep watching.
“I think that would be beyond my pay grade to tell you, [but] worth sticking around for.”
According to Bettany, the relationship between Vision and Ultron is a major part of the show. The series continues the story after the events of WandaVision, where White Vision regains his memories and flies away to figure out who he really is.
Now, in Vision Quest, Vision is trying to rebuild his sense of self while dealing with the emotional weight of his past. Along the way, he will encounter different artificial intelligence characters from Marvel history, including Ultron.
Bettany explained that the show feels like both a continuation and something new at the same time. He described it as part of a larger story but also its own unique project.
“It manages to feel very much like it’s somehow part of [the MCU], an end to a trilogy, whilst also being very much its own thing. And it is just really good. I’m really proud of it,” he said.
He also praised the work being done in post-production, saying the series has only improved over time as visual effects and editing come together.
“We’ve been in editorial for a long while now, and I keep seeing cuts of it that just are getting better and better,” Bettany said. “It’s funny, and it’s moving, and it’s super exciting.”
One of the biggest talking points around the show is the return of Ultron, played again by James Spader. The character first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron and is now expected to play a much larger emotional role in Vision’s story.
Bettany spoke highly of working with Spader again and said the performance is a highlight of the series.
“He is delicious. He’s so funny in this. It’s so delicious to watch him. And we loved working together. I loved it so much,” he said.
When pressed for more details about Ultron’s role, Bettany stayed cautious but confirmed that the character is deeply connected to the story.
“The story largely revolves around that relationship. And it’s really fun. It’s fun stuff.”
Reports also suggest that Ultron may appear in more than one form, including a possible human version shown during early Disney presentations. However, Marvel has not officially confirmed these details.
The series is expected to explore Vision’s fractured identity, especially after his time as White Vision. It will also continue threads left from WandaVision and potentially connect to other future Marvel projects.
Bettany also spoke about how Marvel often keeps even actors in the dark about major plot details. He shared a story about how surprises are sometimes revealed only during filming or post-production.
At this stage, Vision Quest remains one of the most mysterious upcoming Marvel projects. But based on Bettany’s comments, it will mix emotional storytelling, sci-fi ideas, and the complicated history between Vision and Ultron in a major way.
