‘The Pitt’ Star Luke Tennie Reveals the Hilarious Thing Patrick Ball Did When They First Met
Working on a hit TV show often creates fast friendships between actors, especially when filming schedules are intense and everyone spends long hours together on set. For many casts, those early moments off-camera end up becoming just as memorable as the scenes audiences eventually watch on screen.
That seems to have been the case for Luke Tennie while filming Season 2 of The Pitt. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the actor shared a funny story about repeatedly running into co-star Patrick Ball before they officially started working together.
Tennie appeared in three episodes of the show as Dr. Crus Henderson, a night shift resident at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Even though his role was relatively new, he quickly connected with several cast members during production.
According to Tennie, he first met Ball at a mutual friend’s birthday party between seasons. At the time, he already recognized him from the series and wanted to introduce himself. He recalled approaching the actor and saying hello while also meeting Ball’s partner, Elysia Roorbach.
Tennie told PEOPLE, “I see homie from The Pitt and I go to say, ‘What’s up? I’m a big fan.’” He added that the couple was extremely friendly and welcoming during their first conversation.
The funny part came afterward, because the two actors kept unexpectedly crossing paths at different events before filming finally began. Tennie explained that they saw each other again at an Emmys gathering and then later at another party.
By the time production started, the repeated meetings had already become a running joke between them. Tennie said that when he arrived at the trailer during filming, Ball immediately greeted him with a joke about how often they had seen each other lately.
He recalled Ball telling him, “Buddy, we have to stop meeting like this.”
Tennie said the moment instantly made him feel comfortable on set because the actor already felt familiar after their multiple encounters. The relaxed dynamic helped create an easy friendship while filming the medical drama.

The Pitt has quickly become one of the most talked-about medical shows on television. The series, created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by Noah Wyle and John Wells, follows hospital staff during one long and stressful 15-hour shift. Season 2 focused on a Fourth of July shift filled with emergencies, chaos, and emotional moments.
Besides The Pitt, Tennie has also been building a strong television career through roles in Shrinking and Abbott Elementary. Speaking with PEOPLE, he explained that acting on The Pitt feels very different compared to comedy-focused projects like Shrinking.
He said, “There is an element of realism that is so necessary in The Pitt that I think it kind of reeducates your motor as an actor.”
Tennie also described how each show requires a completely different acting style. According to him, comedy needs more looseness and spontaneity, while The Pitt depends heavily on precision and control during scenes.
Although it is still unclear whether Tennie will return for Season 3, fans are already expecting the series to continue expanding its night shift storylines. Reports have also suggested that more focus could be placed on those characters moving forward.
For now, Tennie’s behind-the-scenes story has given fans another reminder of how naturally close casts can become while working on long television productions together.
