New Look at Spider-Man and The Punisher Together in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Teases a Brutal MCU Team-Up
A new look at Spider-Man and The Punisher in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been released through Empire Magazine, giving fans another glimpse at the unusual pairing set up for the upcoming Marvel film.
The film is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and continues to build interest as it brings together two very different Marvel characters. Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, is known for his lighter tone and younger perspective. The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, is the opposite, defined by violence, anger, and a strict no-mercy approach to justice.
Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, first appeared in Netflix’s Marvel series, and later returned in Daredevil: Born Again and the MCU Special Presentation The Punisher: One Last Kill. Across those appearances, the character has been shown in very dark environments, dealing with crime in extreme and often brutal ways. That has led to questions about how he will fit into a Spider-Man film.
Tom Holland addressed those concerns in his interview with Empire Magazine. He explained that the production team is aware of the challenge and has worked to keep the character’s identity intact while adjusting the tone for a wider audience.
“I know that there are concerns about taking a sort of R-rated character and putting him into one of these movies, but the way that we’ve designed the world around him feels very authentic to the Frank Castle we know,” Holland said. His comments suggest that the character will not be softened beyond recognition, even if the film itself remains accessible to a broader audience.
He also spoke about how the film may handle Frank Castle’s more intense traits. “There are fun ways to get around the fact that he swears all the time and kills people,” Holland added. This points to creative storytelling choices that allow the character to stay true to himself without pushing the limits of a PG-13 style film too far.
Jon Bernthal also shared his view of Frank Castle’s role in the story. He described the character as someone who does not seek connection or partnership. “Frank Castle is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” Bernthal said. “He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend, he’s not looking for a hand to pull him out of the hole that he’s in. He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper.”
Even so, Bernthal hinted that there may still be a connection between Castle and Peter Parker. “I think, begrudgingly, Frank would tell you, if he had to be honest, he does care about Peter,” he added. This suggests the relationship between the two characters will be complicated, likely built on tension rather than trust.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to explore how Peter Parker reacts when faced with more extreme heroes operating in the same world. Based on early comments and casting, the film appears to be focused on contrast, showing how very different approaches to justice collide within the MCU.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 31, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.
