Hannah Waddingham Weighs In on Ted and Rebecca Romance in ‘Ted Lasso’
Hannah Waddingham spoke about her role in Ted Lasso, the show’s return, and fan interest in whether her character Rebecca Welton should ever end up in a romance with Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis. The interview was conducted by K.J. Yossman, with photographs by Zoe McConnell.
Waddingham made it clear that she does not see Rebecca’s relationship with Ted as romantic, even though some fans continue to speculate about it. She explained that she values the way the show keeps their bond grounded in something deeper than romance.
She said, “I love that we buck against the norm,” referring to the relationship between Ted and Rebecca. She added, “And they are undoubtedly soulmates, but that can mean a myriad of things.” For her, the word “soulmates” does not automatically mean a love story or a couple. It can also describe a strong emotional connection without romance.
Waddingham also responded to the idea that fans want the characters to get together. She acknowledged that she understands why people think about it, but she does not agree with forcing that direction into the story. She said, “I love all the relationships in it.” That includes friendships, team dynamics, and the wider group of characters in AFC Richmond.
The discussion comes as Ted Lasso prepares for its fourth season, after the third season ended with Rebecca moving forward in her personal life and career. Waddingham said earlier in the interview that she is happy the show continues, describing her connection to Rebecca as something she deeply values.

Much of her interview focused on returning to the character and working again with Jason Sudeikis, who co-created the series and plays Ted. She described their working process as flexible and constantly evolving on set. She said, “With that boy, you’ve got to roll with the punches. He and I have an ongoing love-hate relationship that he changes it last minute.” While this comment referred to their working dynamic, it also reflects the creative back-and-forth that shapes scenes between Ted and Rebecca.
Despite ongoing fan theories, Waddingham’s stance is consistent. She sees the relationship as meaningful without needing to turn it into romance. Her comments suggest the show will likely continue to keep Ted and Rebecca’s connection in a non-romantic space, focused more on emotional understanding and mutual respect than a traditional love storyline.
