Amazon has decided not to move forward with its planned Stargate television series, according to an exclusive report from Variety. The project had been announced with a full series order in November 2025, but it has now been canceled before reaching production.

The show was being developed by Martin Gero, who was set to serve as writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Gero is well known to longtime Stargate fans because he previously worked as a writer on both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

According to Variety, a source familiar with the situation said Amazon executives were worried that Gero’s version of the series would mainly appeal to existing Stargate fans rather than attracting a wider audience. Because of those concerns, the company chose not to continue with the project.

Even though this particular series is no longer happening, Amazon has not given up on the Stargate franchise. Variety reports that the company is still looking at other ways to expand the science-fiction universe in the future. Amazon gained control of the Stargate property after acquiring MGM Studios, the company behind the franchise, and has been exploring new Stargate projects since 2022.

While the cancellation may disappoint fans who were hoping for a fresh chapter in the franchise, Martin Gero will continue working with Amazon. He remains under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios and is expected to develop other projects for the company.

Very little was ever revealed about the canceled series. No official story details or plot information were released during its development. As a result, fans never got a clear idea of how Gero planned to approach the Stargate universe or what direction the new show would take.

Several well-known names from the franchise were attached to the project. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell were executive producers through Safehouse Pictures. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who created the original Stargate film together in the 1990s, were also involved as executive producers. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, both important figures in the history of Stargate television, were brought on as consulting producers.

The Stargate franchise began with the 1994 movie directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. The film starred James Spader and Kurt Russell and introduced audiences to the concept of traveling through mysterious portals known as Stargates.

The movie later inspired Stargate SG-1, which became one of the most successful science-fiction television series ever made. The show ran for 10 seasons and featured actors including Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. Its success led to additional projects, including Stargate Atlantis, which aired for five seasons between 2004 and 2008.

Over the years, the franchise expanded further with two direct-to-video films and several other television productions. The most recent Stargate series was Stargate Origins, which was released in 2018.

For now, fans will have to wait and see what Amazon decides to do next with the Stargate universe, as the company continues to explore new possibilities for the long-running franchise, according to Variety.
