The ‘Masters of the Universe‘ universe has given pop culture some of its most iconic female characters, and both Teela and She-Ra stand among the franchise’s most beloved.

Now with the release of the live-action ‘Masters of the Universe’ movie, newcomers to the franchise are interested in the origins of the two most notable characters.

Despite sharing the same fictional world and occasionally crossing paths on screen, the two have entirely distinct origins, identities, and destinies.

Teela is the Captain of the Royal Guard and the adopted daughter of Man-At-Arms. Her story is rooted in Eternia, where she serves as one of He-Man’s closest allies and most capable warriors.

Her true heritage, however, is far more complex. The episode “Teela’s Quest” revealed that Man-At-Arms had raised her from infancy at the request of the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, who is in fact Teela’s biological mother.

Across minicomics, animation, comics, and modern reimaginings, Teela has evolved far beyond the role of side character, with later versions deepening her mythology and exploring her connection to the Sorceress, her destiny beyond the palace walls, and her struggle with truth, duty, and identity.

She-Ra is the heroine alter ego of Princess Adora and the twin sister of He-Man. She is the star of the animated series ‘She-Ra: Princess of Power’, which was an attempt to make a version of the ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ cartoon that would appeal to young girls.

Adora was born on Eternia as the twin sister of Prince Adam, but she was kidnapped by the villain Hordak at birth and brought to the planet Etheria. Under his influence and mind-controlled by the villainess Shadow Weaver, Adora grew up as the captain of Hordak’s army. Years later, she was reunited with her brother, and upon learning the truth of her origins, she raised her sword and transformed into She-Ra, joining the Great Rebellion to fight against the very forces she had once served.

The mix-up is understandable. Both Teela and She-Ra are prominent women in ‘Masters of the Universe’ media, both are skilled warriors, and both have mysterious lineages tied to greater destinies.

Teela appeared as one of the primary characters in ‘He-Man and the Masters of the Universe’ and appeared as a guest character in its spinoff, ‘She-Ra: Princess of Power’, which means the two actually share screen time and interact directly. When you have two powerful female warriors occupying the same franchise, casual viewers sometimes conflate the two.

Their fates also carry a similar mythological weight. Teela is destined to become the next Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, a role tied to an ancient and sacred lineage. She-Ra, meanwhile, is heralded as the most powerful woman in the universe, wielding the Sword of Protection on Etheria. Both carry enormous responsibility, but they are on entirely separate journeys on entirely separate planets.

So to put it simply: Teela is the warrior of Eternia with a secret destiny tied to Castle Grayskull, and She-Ra is the Princess of Power, the twin sister of He-Man, fighting to free Etheria. Both are icons, both deserve their flowers, and neither needs to be the other to be remarkable.

Masters of the Universe (also known internationally as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe) is a 2026 American fantasy film based on the Mattel franchise. It is the second live-action adaptation after the 1987 movie and was directed by Travis Knight, with a screenplay by Chris Butler, Aaron Nee, Adam Nee, and David Callaham. The film stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam / He-Man, alongside a large cast including Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Idris Elba, Kristen Wiig, Morena Baccarin, and others.

The story follows Prince Adam, who returns to the planet Eternia after being separated for 15 years. There, he finds his home in ruins and under the control of the villainous Skeletor. With help from allies like Teela and Man-At-Arms, Adam must accept his destiny and become He-Man to save his world.

The project had a long development history, moving from Sony Pictures to Netflix and later to Amazon MGM Studios. Filming took place in London between January and June 2025. The movie premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on 18 May and is set for release on 5 June, receiving mixed to positive early reviews.
