‘Star Wars’ Director Shawn Levy Teases Wild Crossover Idea Blending Star Wars With a Modern Horror Hit

Shawn Levy has sparked a wave of online discussion after suggesting a surprising crossover idea that blends Star Wars with the viral horror hit Backrooms.

The idea comes at a time when both franchises are dominating headlines for very different reasons. A24’s Backrooms has become a breakout box office success, even overtaking expectations in its opening run. Its performance has drawn attention not just as a horror hit, but as a cultural moment, especially given its timing alongside major Star Wars releases.

Shawn Levy, who is currently working on Star Wars: Starfighter and also serves as a producer on Backrooms, spoke about the idea during a recent interview with Vanity Fair. He admitted that working closely with both projects has naturally led him to imagine what a crossover between the two worlds could look like.

“Right now, I’m making a movie called Star Wars: Starfighter, and so I very much have Star Wars on my mind. And I can’t help but be captivated by a Backrooms x Star Wars mashup and, luckily, I’ve got a little bit involvement in both, so I’ll see what I can do,” Levy said.

His comments quickly gained attention because they connect two very different storytelling universes.

Levy’s involvement in both projects has made the idea of a crossover more interesting to fans, even if it remains purely speculative. However, turning such a concept into an actual film would be extremely complicated due to rights ownership and studio boundaries. Disney controls the Star Wars franchise, while Backrooms exists under a separate production setup, making any official crossover unlikely at this stage.

Even so, Levy’s comments have fueled conversation about what kind of creative collaboration could exist between the two worlds. Some industry watchers believe that instead of a direct story crossover, future collaborations could happen behind the scenes, such as filmmakers or creative teams moving between projects or contributing ideas across franchises.

There has also been ongoing fan discussion about whether Star Wars could ever explore darker or more experimental tones. While the franchise has traditionally stayed within the space fantasy and sci-fi adventure space, newer interpretations and spin-offs have occasionally introduced more unusual or surreal concepts.

Some fans believe that elements like the “World Between Worlds” seen in Star Wars: Ahsoka already hint at more abstract storytelling possibilities that could align loosely with the unsettling tone of Backrooms.

For now, Levy’s idea remains just that—an idea sparked by working inside two very different creative worlds. But his comments have added another layer to the ongoing conversation about how far major franchises can stretch their storytelling boundaries in the modern entertainment landscape.
