Ghostface Celebrates ‘Scary Movie 6’ Outside Chinese Theater With Wild & Hilarious Sign
The new Scary Movie film was released in the United States on June 5, through Paramount Pictures. It marks the sixth entry in the parody franchise and comes more than a decade after Scary Movie 5 was released in 2013.
The film is directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez. The project has also been described as a spiritual continuation of the earlier films, especially the first two installments that defined the series’ style.
The cast brings back several familiar faces. Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall all return to the franchise. The story follows Cindy Campbell, Ray Wilkins, and the Meeks siblings as they reunite after a masked killer returns. The film leans again into parody of horror films, especially the Scream franchise, which has long been central to the Scary Movie style.
Ahead of and during the release, a promotional stunt took place outside the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. A performer dressed as Ghostface appeared in public holding a sign that read “honk if you’re horny” to promote the film. The moment was shared widely online and became part of the film’s chaotic marketing push.
The return of the Scary Movie franchise was first announced in 2024. Later that same year, it was confirmed that the Wayans family would be involved again. This marked their first return to the franchise since Scary Movie 2 in 2001. Their departure at the time was linked to creative disagreements with the original production team, making their return a notable shift in the franchise’s history.
Despite the strong nostalgia and returning cast, early critical reception has been mostly negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 27 percent score based on 86 critic reviews, with an average rating of 4.3 out of 10. On Metacritic, it has a score of 38 out of 100, based on 23 reviews, which indicates generally unfavorable reviews. Audience reactions tracked by CinemaScore gave the film a C+ grade, showing a mixed response from general viewers as well.

Critics have focused on issues with the film’s jokes, structure, and parody choices. Variety critic Owen Gleiberman said that the movie struggles with its comedic targets and does not fully develop fresh ideas. He wrote, “The majority of the jokes come off as more asserted than delighted. And maybe that’s because the film doesn’t feel like it’s discovering anything new about what’s happening between the lines of the Scream genre.”
David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also gave a negative review, though he noted that the opening scene stands out as one of the stronger parts of the film. He wrote, “but it’s pretty much downhill from there.” He also added, “This ‘rebootiquel’, as one of the characters refers to it, needs fresh inspiration and not just a lazy retread of the same old meta contortions if it’s to have a life much beyond its opening weekend.”
While critics have been mostly negative, the film still benefits from brand recognition and nostalgia. The return of original cast members and the Wayans family has drawn attention from long-time fans of the series. However, early reviews suggest that the film struggles to match the impact of the earlier installments.
Overall, Scary Movie 6 arrives as a high-profile comedy release with strong promotional visibility but divided reception. The Ghostface stunt outside the Chinese Theatre reflects the film’s chaotic and exaggerated tone, while the critical response suggests that it may not fully recapture the success of its earlier era.
