The Wayans Return: ‘Scary Movie 6’ Pulls Off the Most Insane Box Office Comeback in Years
Scary Movie has delivered a massive comeback at the global box office, giving the long-running comedy franchise its biggest opening weekend ever. According to box office figures reported by Deadline, the new film debuted with an impressive $105.5 million worldwide, making it one of the strongest comedy launches in recent years.
The movie earned $55 million in North America and another $50.5 million from international markets. Those numbers pushed the latest installment past every previous Scary Movie film and helped it secure the top spot at the global box office during its opening weekend.
The success is especially notable because comedy films have struggled to attract large theatrical audiences in recent years. Paramount and Miramax appear to have found the right formula by bringing back the franchise’s familiar style and involving the Wayans brothers, who both star in and wrote the film.
International audiences played a major role in the film’s record-breaking debut. The movie opened in 53 overseas markets and finished as the number one film across many territories. According to Deadline, the international opening was 75 percent bigger than the previous franchise record holder, Scary Movie 3.
Mexico became one of the strongest markets for the film, generating $6.7 million and marking the biggest opening ever for a Paramount comedy in the country. The United Kingdom followed with $5.5 million, while Brazil delivered $5.1 million. Germany also contributed $5.5 million, with France bringing in $3.2 million and Australia adding $2.7 million.
The comedy also claimed the number one position in several countries, including Italy, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Panama, Poland, Chile, and Austria. Even in markets where it did not finish first, the movie still posted solid results and remained among the weekend’s top performers.

In the United States and Canada, audience turnout was equally strong. Data from EntTelligence showed that approximately 3.76 million tickets were sold during the opening weekend. Interestingly, 41 percent of Saturday’s business came after 8 p.m., showing that moviegoers were eager to catch the comedy during evening showtimes.
The audience demographics also reveal why the film connected so well with viewers. According to Paramount’s data, 88 percent of attendees described themselves as fans of the franchise, while 90 percent said they had seen at least one previous Scary Movie film. The movie clearly benefited from nostalgia, but it also attracted younger viewers. People under the age of 35 accounted for 78 percent of the audience.
The film’s marketing campaign appears to have played a major role in building excitement. Deadline reported that the first trailer debuted exclusively in theaters ahead of Scream 7 and generated more than 300 million views. The official online launch later surpassed 410 million views during its first week, becoming the second-biggest trailer debut in Paramount’s history.
While other films struggled to gain momentum at the box office, Scary Movie stood out as the weekend’s clear winner. The franchise has always relied on parody, outrageous humor, and pop culture references, and audiences seem eager to revisit that formula on the big screen.
With such a strong opening, Scary Movie has already proven that there is still a large audience for theatrical comedy. The record-breaking debut not only marks a major win for the franchise but also shows that comedy movies can still become major box office events when they connect with fans.
