Trapped Inside a Whale: Austin Abrams Fights for Survival in the First ‘Whalefall’ Trailer
A new survival thriller is heading to theaters this fall, and its first trailer has already grabbed plenty of attention. Whalefall, directed by Brian Duffield, tells the story of a scuba diver who finds himself trapped inside a giant sperm whale with only a limited amount of oxygen left. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 16.
The film is based on the bestselling novel by Daniel Kraus, who also helped write the screenplay alongside Duffield. While the premise may sound unusual, the first trailer makes it clear that this is a tense race against time rather than a fantasy adventure.
Austin Abrams stars as the young diver at the center of the story. After a routine dive goes horribly wrong, he is swallowed whole by a massive whale. What follows is a desperate fight for survival as he searches for a way out before his oxygen supply runs out.
According to comments Duffield shared with TheWrap, the most challenging part of making the movie was not filming the underwater scenes. Instead, it was creating the long sequences that take place inside the whale itself.
“The bulk of our movie takes place within the whale himself, and we go a really long time without cutting outside,” Duffield explained.
The director said much of the film unfolds almost in real time. As the clock ticks down, the diver must navigate different chambers inside the whale while dealing with a dangerous environment that seems determined to destroy him. Adding to the tension is the presence of a giant squid trapped inside the whale alongside him.
The whale interior and many of the practical effects were created by the team at Weta, the visual effects company known for its work on major Hollywood productions. Rather than relying entirely on flashy visuals, Duffield said he wanted the audience to feel trapped alongside the main character.
“This movie needs to feel like Austin Abrams and the audience are stuck in this whale’s mouth or swallowed by the water or stuck in the stomach together,” he told TheWrap.
The story is not just about survival. At its heart, Whalefall is also a father-and-son drama. Josh Brolin plays the father of Abrams’ character, and the movie uses flashbacks to explore their relationship. These moments provide emotional depth while the main story focuses on the struggle to stay alive.
Whalefall arrives during a busy period for Austin Abrams. The actor is also leading the upcoming Resident Evil movie, which is set to release just weeks before this film. Duffield believes audiences will get to see very different sides of the actor in the two projects.
“I think these are going to be two very different movies and two very different characters and performances, so I’m really thrilled for him,” the director said.
Duffield also revealed that the movie was filmed in Los Angeles with a crew that embraced the unusual challenges of the production. He praised the team for taking on something they had never done before.
With its unusual premise, emotional story, and intense real-time survival setup, Whalefall looks set to be one of the most unique thrillers of the year when it arrives exclusively in theaters on October 16.
