A new live-action take on the Scooby-Doo franchise is on the way, and fans are getting a new look at what the series is building toward. The show, titled Scooby-Doo: Origins, is set to bring a mix of live-action and CGI to Netflix when it releases in 2027.

The series is described as a supernatural mystery story that follows four teenagers as they try to solve a strange case involving a possible supernatural murder. The twist is that the only witness might be a Great Dane puppy who will later become Scooby-Doo.

The series was created by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who also serve as showrunners, head writers, and executive producers. Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions, and Midnight Radio are all involved in production. Development on the project was first reported in April 2024, with the official announcement coming in March 2025, according to Deadline Hollywood and Netflix press materials.

The story focuses on how the famous group first comes together. Daphne Blake, Shaggy Rogers, Velma Dinkley, and Fred Jones are all teenagers spending their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears. While there, they get pulled into a mystery involving a supernatural event and a possible murder case. The investigation becomes the moment that connects their futures.

Casting for the series brings together a mix of young actors and experienced performers. Mckenna Grace plays Daphne Blake, while Tanner Hagen takes on the role of Shaggy Rogers. Abby Ryder Fortson plays Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins plays Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser appears as Scooby’s owner, while Frank Welker returns to voice Scooby-Doo, continuing his long history with the character that dates back decades. Sara Gilbert and Maxwell Simkins also appear in supporting roles.

Frank Welker’s involvement has been highlighted in early production updates, since he has voiced Scooby-Doo for many years across different animated projects. His return connects the new series to the franchise’s long-running legacy.

The series is being positioned as a reimagining of how the mystery-solving team first formed. Instead of starting with the fully established group fans know, Scooby-Doo: Origins explores their early days and how they slowly become the team that would later travel in the Mystery Machine solving cases.

Filming for the show began on April 24 at Cinespace Film Studios in Atlanta. Production is expected to continue through September 2026. According to production listings and industry reports, the series is planned as an eight-episode season.

Netflix has confirmed that Scooby-Doo: Origins will premiere in 2027. While no full trailer has been released yet, early production updates and casting news have already built strong interest, especially among long-time fans of the franchise.

The series is part of a larger effort to reintroduce classic animated properties in new formats. With its mix of mystery, teenage drama, and CGI elements, the show aims to offer a new version of a well-known story while keeping its core characters recognizable.

For now, fans are waiting for more visuals and trailers. But with filming underway and a full cast in place, Scooby-Doo: Origins is already shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most talked-about upcoming releases.
