First Look at Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’ Reveals Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Terrifying Transformation
Fans finally have their first look at Werwulf, the upcoming horror film from acclaimed director Robert Eggers. The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role and promises to deliver a dark and unsettling take on werewolf folklore when it arrives in theaters on December 25.
The project has already attracted plenty of attention thanks to Eggers’ reputation for creating atmospheric and visually striking horror films. The filmmaker is known for movies such as The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu. Now he is turning his attention to one of horror’s oldest legends.
According to information released about the film, Werwulf takes place in 13th-century England. The story follows a mysterious creature that begins terrorizing a remote countryside village. As fear spreads among the local population, ancient folklore and terrifying legends start becoming reality. What begins as rumors soon turns into a nightmare for the villagers as they struggle to survive the growing threat.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson leads an impressive cast that also includes Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, Jack Morris, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Jan Bijvoet, and Ritchi Edwards. Several of these actors have previously worked with Eggers, making Werwulf something of a reunion for the filmmaker and some of his favorite collaborators.
The screenplay was co-written by Eggers and Icelandic writer Sjón, who previously worked together on The Northman. The pair have developed a reputation for creating stories that blend history, mythology, and dark fantasy, and Werwulf appears to continue that trend.
One detail that has generated excitement among horror fans is Eggers’ commitment to historical authenticity. Reports have stated that parts of the film feature Middle English, helping create a realistic portrayal of life during the medieval period. This attention to detail has become one of the director’s trademarks over the years.
Eggers previously described the screenplay as his darkest work yet. In an earlier interview, he reportedly said that “Werwulf was the darkest script” he had ever written. For a filmmaker known for disturbing and intense stories, that statement has only increased anticipation surrounding the project.
Production on the film began in late 2025 and took place across several locations in England and Wales. Filming occurred at Sky Studios Elstree as well as outdoor locations including Dartmoor, Surrey, and the Forest of Dean. Longtime Eggers collaborator Jarin Blaschke returned as cinematographer, continuing a creative partnership that has helped define the visual style of the director’s previous films.
The first footage from Werwulf was shown earlier this year during Universal and Focus Features’ presentation at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas. While the footage has not been released publicly, early reactions reportedly praised the film’s eerie atmosphere and haunting visuals.
The newly released first look image is giving audiences their first real glimpse at the project, and it suggests that Eggers is once again creating something unique within the horror genre. With a talented cast, a legendary monster at its center, and a filmmaker known for delivering unforgettable nightmares, Werwulf is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated horror movies of 2026.
Werwulf arrives exclusively in theaters on December 25.
