James Gunn’s DC Universe has been steadily building momentum since Superman hit theaters, and every new casting update seems to send fans into overdrive. Few additions have generated quite as much speculation as Adria Arjona, whose upcoming role in Man of Tomorrow has kept the internet guessing for months now.

The Andor and Morbius actress officially joined the cast earlier this year, though Warner Bros has remained tight lipped about which character she will actually be playing. That silence has only fueled more curiosity, especially once fans got their first real look at how seriously she is taking her physical preparation for the part.

Personal trainer Paolo Mascitti, who also helped David Corenswet bulk up for his own turn as the Man of Steel, has been sharing regular glimpses of Arjona’s transformation on Instagram. His latest post shows the actress in a black sports bra and leggings, visibly leaner and more defined than in earlier training clips, and it has once again reignited the debate over exactly who she will be playing on screen.

Arjona has widely been reported as playing Maxima, the warrior queen of Almerac who arrives on Earth in search of a worthy mate and sets her sights on Superman in the comics. The character is known for her psionic powers and enhanced strength, which would easily explain the kind of intense weight training Mascitti has been documenting since filming began.

Despite that reporting, a vocal contingent of fans remains convinced Arjona is secretly playing Wonder Woman instead, a role many had already fan-cast her for long before Man of Tomorrow entered production. That theory has only grown louder with each new training post, as commenters point to her increasingly toned frame as evidence that she is preparing for something bigger than a supporting antagonist role.

The uncertainty is not helped by the fact that Arjona trains alongside Corenswet’s own trainer, someone with a track record of preparing DC Studios actors for physically demanding superhero roles. Whether she ends up wielding Maxima’s power set or Diana’s golden armor, her commitment to the physical transformation has made clear that whatever role she has landed will not be a passive one.

Man of Tomorrow finds Superman forced into an uneasy alliance with Lex Luthor after the artificial intelligence villain Brainiac emerges as a threat too dangerous for either of them to face alone. David Corenswet returns as Clark Kent, with Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Luthor and Lars Eidinger stepping in as Brainiac.

The ensemble cast surrounding them is stacked, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, among several others. Filming has been taking place across multiple locations, including Trilith Studios in Atlanta, the United Kingdom, and Cincinnati, Ohio.

Some fans have pointed to similarities between the film’s premise and the 1992 comic storyline Panic in the Sky, in which Maxima initially aligns herself with Brainiac before eventually turning against him alongside Superman and a coalition of other heroes. If Gunn is drawing from that storyline even loosely, it would help explain why Arjona’s character arc might require this level of physical intensity from the jump.

Reactions to Arjona’s transformation have been predictably split online. Some fans have leaned fully into the Maxima theory, arguing there is no realistic scenario where Gunn introduces Wonder Woman for the first time inside a Superman sequel rather than her own dedicated film.

Others remain firmly convinced the physique speaks for itself, insisting that pairing her with Corenswet on screen would set up an ideal foundation for a future Justice League team dynamic. There has also been some pushback from fans wary of another high-profile role going to an actress who had already been the subject of extensive online fan casting before her involvement was even confirmed.

Regardless of which side of the debate fans land on, one thing seems certain heading into the film’s July 2027 release. Whoever Arjona ends up playing, her training regimen suggests Gunn is not asking her to simply stand around in a cape.
