Brenda Fricker, the Oscar-winning Irish actress who was loved by generations of movie fans for her role as the Pigeon Lady in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, has died at the age of 81. According to Deadline, her death was confirmed by her longtime agent, Phil Belfield, after a period of ill health.

Belfield paid tribute to the actress in a heartfelt statement, remembering both her talent and the impact she had on audiences around the world.

“We will never see her like again and the world is lesser for the lack of her,” Belfield said. He also added, “I was honored to know, love and work with her and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.”

While many younger viewers remember Fricker as the kind-hearted Pigeon Lady who befriends Kevin McCallister in Home Alone 2, her career stretched across decades and included one of the highest honors an actor can receive.

Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1945, Fricker did not begin her professional life as an actress. According to Deadline, she first worked as a journalist before making the move into television and film. Early in her acting career, she appeared in well-known British television series including Coronation Street and Casualty. She became a familiar face to TV audiences through her role as Megan Roach, appearing in 65 episodes of Casualty.

Her biggest breakthrough came in 1989 with Jim Sheridan’s My Left Foot. In the acclaimed drama, Fricker played Bridget Fagan Brown, the mother of Christy Brown, portrayed by Daniel Day-Lewis. The film told the true story of Brown, an Irish writer and artist born with cerebral palsy who could control only his left foot.

Fricker’s performance earned widespread praise and won her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She became the first Irish actress ever to receive an Oscar, beating nominees that included Julia Roberts and Anjelica Huston.

Just a few years later, Fricker reached an entirely different audience with Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Her performance as the lonely Pigeon Lady became one of the film’s most emotional moments. Although she shared only a handful of scenes with Macaulay Culkin, the character left a lasting impression and remains one of the movie’s most beloved figures more than three decades later.

Following those career-defining roles, Fricker continued working steadily in film. According to Deadline, she appeared in movies including So I Married an Axe Murderer, Moll Flanders, Veronica Guerin, and Albert Nobbs, building a filmography that spanned many different genres and generations.

News of her passing quickly spread online, with many fans remembering both her Oscar-winning work and the warmth she brought to Home Alone 2. For countless viewers, especially those who revisit the holiday classic every year, Fricker’s performance as the Pigeon Lady became an unforgettable symbol of kindness and compassion.

Although Brenda Fricker is gone, her work continues to reach new audiences through the films and television shows she leaves behind. From becoming the first Irish actress to win an Academy Award to creating one of the most memorable supporting characters in Home Alone 2, she leaves a legacy that has touched millions of people around the world.
