‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Revival Faces Backlash as OG Star Questions Missing Characters

Disney Channel revivals have become something of a mixed bag over the past few years, with nostalgia only carrying a show so far before audiences start asking harder questions about what actually made the original special. Fans of beloved Disney Channel series have grown increasingly vocal about these follow-ups, comparing every new episode against the version they grew up watching.

‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ found itself squarely in that conversation as its own run wound down this week. The Disney+ sequel series had built its entire premise around bringing back familiar faces from the original ‘Wizards of Waverly Place,’ though not everyone from that cast made the trip back to the family lair.

That absence is now getting called out directly by one of the actors who didn’t return. David DeLuise, who played Selena Gomez’s on-screen father in the original series, said the sequel “would not be over if the OG wizards were really there,” posting the blunt critique on Instagram as the show’s finale aired on August 4.

DeLuise left his comment underneath a video posted by Entertainment Tonight featuring Gomez and David Henrie discussing the show’s third and final season. He closed out his message with an even sharper jab, adding “Missed opportunity” to cap off the critique. The comment struck a chord with fans, drawing more than 2,000 likes in less than a day.

DeLuise’s frustration touches on a decision that shaped ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ from its earliest announcement. The sequel series, first revealed in 2024, brought back Gomez and Henrie as executive producers reprising their original roles, while their on-screen brother Jake T. Austin did not return, with the storyline instead revealing his character had turned the family sandwich shop into a multimillion-dollar empire and was now living on a yacht.

DeLuise himself wasn’t part of the show’s earliest episodes either, only appearing later as the series brought back additional familiar faces including Maria Canals-Barrera, who played Russo family matriarch Theresa Russo. That gradual, partial reassembly of the original cast is exactly what DeLuise appears to be pointing to in his comment, suggesting a fuller reunion could have changed the show’s fate entirely.

‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ ultimately ran for three seasons total across 35 episodes, though its third and final season arrived as an abbreviated four-episode finale that released on Tuesday night. That truncated final run stands in contrast to the show’s earlier momentum, when its first season premiere pulled in 3.2 million views within its first 12 days of streaming, making it Disney Channel’s most-watched series premiere on Disney+ at the time.

DeLuise’s comment adds a notably candid voice to the show’s send-off, coming from someone with direct insight into what made the original series resonate with audiences for four seasons. Whether a full cast reunion truly would have changed the sequel’s trajectory remains up for debate, but DeLuise clearly believes the show left something on the table.
