‘Broad Trip’ Star Sophia Bush Drops a Major Surprise: She and Ashlyn Harris Secretly Married Last Summer
Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris have spent nearly 3 years building a relationship that is public but carefully guarded. They began dating in October 2023 after their respective divorces, and made their red carpet debut as a couple at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 27, 2024. That appearance came just days after Bush’s Glamour cover story.
In that story, Bush publicly identified as queer and confirmed her relationship with Harris. Harris, a retired soccer goalkeeper and two-time World Cup winner, shares 2 children, Sloane and Ocean, with her ex-wife Ali Krieger. Bush, meanwhile, had been married to Chad Michael Murray from 2005 to 2006 and later to Grant Hughes.
On Sept. 30, Vogue published an excerpt from Bush’s upcoming memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress, and with it came a surprise. Bush and Harris are married, and have been since summer 2025, when they wed in an intimate ceremony in upstate New York. Pop Crave’s post sharing the news passed 339,000 views on X.
The details are intentionally low-key. The ceremony took place in a backyard, and Bush’s best friend and producing partner, Nia Batts, got ordained online to officiate. Harris wore a black tuxedo and a cowboy hat, while Bush rewore an old black velvet dress with gold flecks that she found in her basement.
Harris’ children were there too, running around and picking flowers from the property. The couple tucked their handwritten vows into a Mary Oliver book, and the night ended with the family roasting marshmallows together. Bush has described the wedding photos as pure joy.
The couple did not announce anything afterward. Instead, they traveled around the country to tell their loved ones in person, keeping the marriage private for more than a year. Bush said that after years of having her life dissected in headlines, she wanted the day to belong to them first.
The decision to go public came from a simple frustration. Bush said she was tired of describing Harris as her partner on panels and in interviews, and told her that the word no longer fit because Harris is her wife. That moment, she said, felt meaningful for both of them.
It was also a deeply personal choice about how to share the news. Harris said visibility remains important to them, and both she and Bush serve on the board of the Human Rights Campaign. The couple has been active supporters of LGBTQ+ causes for some time.
Marriage was not an easy decision for Bush. In the memoir excerpt, she acknowledges that she is a 2-time divorcee, yet says she knew quickly and clearly that she wanted to marry Harris. She writes that she would rather face another divorce, handled with love and tenderness, than miss her chance at being married to her. She also found inspiration in the long-lasting relationship of Harris’ grandparents.
The memoir itself has been a long time coming. Bush told People that her book agent and a handful of editors had been asking her to write a book for a decade, and she said no for 9 years. She said that when her life finally felt like all the pieces were in the right place, she realized why people might want her to share her story.
The book arrives on Oct. 27, which means the wedding news is only the first of its revelations. Fans of the ‘One Tree Hill’ star can expect more of the story she has chosen to tell in her own words. For now, the couple has made one thing official: after 3 years together, Bush gets to call Harris her wife in public.
What do you think of their decision to keep the wedding private?
