Every August bank holiday weekend, West London turns into a sea of feathers, sequins and soca. Notting Hill Carnival is often called Europe’s largest street party, and it celebrates Caribbean culture, music and heritage. A growing number of public figures use the festival to celebrate their roots, and few do it as enthusiastically as Nathalie Emmanuel.

The carnival has a deep history. It emerged from the experience of the Windrush generation, who came to post-war Britain seeking a better life, and has run as a street festival since 1966. It represents what organizers call the 5 disciplines of carnival: masquerade, calypso, soca, steelpan and sound systems.

Emmanuel has made the festival a yearly ritual. In 2025, she joined the Hot Gyal Section mas band and wore a purple-and-gold costume by Tiffanni T of Airam Tribe, carrying the flags of Dominica and Saint Lucia. She described the carnival as her happy place in an Instagram caption.

This year was a milestone. Notting Hill Carnival marked its 60th anniversary, with an estimated 2 million revelers over the weekend, according to Time Out Worldwide. Emmanuel returned in full mas, and once again made sure there was no confusion about which Caribbean islands she was representing.

Those images are now circulating again. The pictures show her beaming in an elaborate jeweled costume with towering deep red feathers spreading behind her like wings.

In one shot, she is draped in a Dominica flag, a nod to her heritage. Emmanuel originally shared her photos on Instagram, where she carried the flags of Dominica and Saint Lucia and referenced the telephone area codes for the 2 islands in her caption. Fans were quick to pick up on the detail.

For Emmanuel, carnival is about cultural pride as much as costume. By honoring both Dominica and Saint Lucia, she underlines the personal significance behind the spectacle. The look also fits the festival’s spirit of joy, resistance and community.

The red-feathered costume stands out from last year’s purple and gold, showing a new design each time while keeping the same celebratory approach. Fan accounts have praised the look across social media. The photos’ return to timelines also suggests how much audiences enjoy seeing public figures take part in cultural traditions like this.

Carnival is only one part of Emmanuel’s year. Best known for playing Missandei in ‘Game of Thrones’ from 2013 to 2019, she has also been a fixture of the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise as Ramsey, appearing in ‘Furious 7’, ‘The Fate of the Furious’, ‘F9’ and ‘Fast X’. A sequel to ‘Fast X’ is currently scheduled for 2028.

Her latest release, ‘Confinement’, arrived on Sept. 1 as a Paramount psychological horror film. She plays Stella, a pregnant widow who accepts an invitation to stay with her late husband’s estranged family, only to grow worried about their interest in her unborn child. Her other credits include ‘Megalopolis’ and ‘The Killer’.

Emmanuel is also building a production career. In 2026, she and filmmaker Alex Lanipekun announced their production company, Rebel Island, and launched it with the short film ‘Echoes’, which was selected for the HollyShorts 2026 program. That mix of acting and producing shows an actress who is expanding beyond the roles that made her famous.

For now, though, the carnival photos are the moment fans are celebrating. They capture a performer enjoying a festival that clearly matters to her, in a year when it reached a milestone. If tradition holds, she will be back in costume next summer.
