‘Batwoman’ Star Ruby Rose Opens Up About Being Accused of Killing a Child in Tragic Playground Accident
Ruby Rose has spent much of her career in the public eye, from presenting for MTV Australia to starring in some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. She is best known as Stella Carlin on ‘Orange Is the New Black’, Ares in ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ and Kate Kane in ‘Batwoman’. In recent years, however, the Australian actress has kept a much lower profile.
That has begun to change this fall. Rose is set to return to television in the fifth season of ‘Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test’ on Hulu, and she recently said she has received only one acting offer in the past few years. Speaking about her relationship with the industry, she said she does not know if she is really back.
Now Rose has revealed something far more personal. On Sept. 29, the 40-year-old made her podcast debut on ‘Off the Vine with Kaitlyn Bristowe‘, using the platform to discuss her rise to fame and her eventual retreat from Hollywood. She also opened up about a traumatic event from her teenage years, which the New York Post and several other outlets have since reported on.
Rose said that when she was 15, she was at a social gathering with her mother and family friends at a home in bushland. She snuck away with a friend to smoke her first cigarette near a playground, where they found a 4-year-old boy who was gravely injured. The boy later died after being taken to the hospital.
Rose said what followed was almost as painful as the discovery itself. Police arrived at her high school the next day to question her in front of classmates, and she described being accused of murder at just 15 years old. Some of her peers directed cruel remarks at her, which she said caused a breakdown.
The truth eventually came out. The child’s older brother, who was 7 at the time and witnessed what happened, had been experiencing dissociative amnesia, a condition in which someone forgets information because of stress or trauma. Once he recovered his memory, he told police that the boy’s sweater had caught on the side of the playground slide and that they were unable to free him. It had been a tragic accident, and Rose was cleared.
Even so, the family did not want her at the funeral. Rose said she sent love to the family, and she described the experience as deeply traumatic. Her account has been widely shared this week, though the details come from her own telling on the podcast.
Rose’s openness comes at an interesting moment in her career. After years of stepping back from acting, she has been giving more interviews and returning to television. Reports of her podcast debut said she also discussed her path to fame and her decision to retreat from Hollywood.
Her career has had its share of turning points. She became internationally famous with ‘Orange Is the New Black’ in 2015, then appeared in ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’, ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’, ‘Pitch Perfect 3’ and ‘The Meg’. She was cast in 2018 as the lead of ‘Batwoman’, the first openly gay superhero to headline a TV series, and she later left the show after one season.
In explaining that exit, Rose said she had herniated 2 discs doing stunts and underwent emergency surgery in 2019. She added that her recovery was not the only reason for leaving. Her return to the screen this fall suggests a new chapter, even if she is cautious about calling it a comeback.
For now, the focus is on ‘Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test’, which is available to stream on Hulu. The reality competition will put Rose in front of a wide audience again, with fans curious to see how she approaches the physical and mental challenges. The podcast interview has already given viewers a fuller picture of who she is.
The reaction online has largely centered on empathy for a teenager who went through something no young person should face. Stories like this also highlight how trauma can follow people long after the events themselves. Rose’s willingness to talk about it publicly may help others who have experienced something similar.
