Kevin Atwater leaving ‘Chicago P.D.‘ is no longer a fan worry, it is now a reported reality. After thirteen seasons, original cast member LaRoyce Hawkins is stepping away from the NBC drama as a series regular, according to Deadline and its sources.

For a while the question was pure speculation. Fans grew uneasy when Atwater was missing from an entire episode, yet there was no concrete evidence of an exit at that point. Now that the news has landed, the departure of a man who has been a reliable and trusted officer in Voight’s Intelligence Unit since the first season has become one of the biggest talking points around the show.

Why Kevin Atwater Is Leaving ‘Chicago P.D.’ After Thirteen Seasons

Hawkins first appeared as Atwater in the series premiere in 2014 and has been a constant fan favorite across the show’s thirteen seasons. He was also the only Chicago area actor in the original cast. That makes this exit feel more personal than a typical casting change.

Nobody has explained the decision in public. The show has not given an official reason for the exit, and there is no word yet on why Hawkins will not be returning in a full time capacity. What we do know is that the series is currently casting a new series regular, a Black cop who is an agent of chaos.

Hawkins is not the first major name to head for the door. He joins fellow cast members Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos, who recently exited the cop drama. He is now one of the only original cast members left in the series.

LaRoyce Hawkins Exit Details and What Comes Next

The good news is that this will not be a sudden disappearance. TVLine reported that Hawkins will exit in Season 14, and that he will return to wrap up his character’s storyline before officially leaving. That farewell arc is expected to cover the first few episodes of the new season.

Timing matters here because the new season is already upon us. Season 14 was set to premiere on Wednesday, October 7. The series airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m., so viewers are about to see how the writers handle one of the franchise’s longest running characters.

Cast shake ups are nothing new for this franchise. Toya Turner left after playing Officer Kiana Cook for one season, and Arienne Mandi joined as Officer Eva Imani ahead of Season 13. Even so, losing a founding member hits differently than swapping out a newer face.

Atwater and Tasha Fox Set Up a Miami Goodbye

The groundwork for an exit was laid last season. Atwater reunited with Officer Tasha Fox, an old friend from the police academy, during a case involving a bombing at a downtown Chicago office building. Karen Obilom plays Fox, and the two quickly turned romantic.

Fox also pushed him to think bigger than the city he has always called home. She called out his selfless tendencies, urged him to consider leaving Chicago to start fresh, and invited him to join her in Miami. Then came the twist.

Tasha revealed that she is expecting a child and that Atwater is the father, and he seemed genuinely thrilled and open to moving to Miami with her.

That storyline has fans connecting the dots. One popular theory says Atwater may move to Miami to raise his baby with Tasha. TVLine suggested the exit may be a sign that he will follow his heart to the Sunshine State and raise a family. Nothing has been confirmed, so for now it is a very reasonable guess rather than a spoiler.

What Atwater’s Departure Means for the Show

One reviewer argues that this is more than a simple cast turnover because Atwater expanded the series’ worldview into different and important ideas of what it means to be a cop. The same piece points out that Hawkins is an Illinois native, born in a suburb of Chicago. That local connection has always given the character extra weight.

Fans are also hoping for a gentle landing. One outlet voiced the hope that the show will not kill him off, which would leave room for future cameos. After everything the character has been through, a hopeful send off in Miami would feel earned.

Whatever route the writers choose, the Intelligence Unit will feel different without him. Should Atwater get the quiet family life he has been steering toward with Tasha, or does ‘Chicago P.D.’ owe him one last case that proves why he was the heart of Voight’s team?
